Greenville, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina and the county seat of Laurens County. The population was 117,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site where Greenville now stands was first occupied by Native Americans in 1780 when they built a small palisade to protect their land from European settlers and traders. Greenville was founded on July 12, 1795 by General James Wilkinson and Colonel Nathanael Greene. The town was named after the English green forest that stood near where it now stands. Greenville became a center of trade and industry in the region, with woolen fabrics being the mainstay of its economy. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching a peak population of around 60,000 in 1883. However, over time Greenville declined as mills closed down and unable to compete with larger cities. In 1990, the town lost its status as an incorporated municipality and merged with nearby Catawba County to form new Cumberland County. Today, Greenville is a small community located just outside of Raleigh-Durham metro area
Greenville was founded in 1795 by the £2,000 donation of Colonel Richmond. The city's first Mayor was James McDowell and its first Treasurer was John Crain. In 1849, Greenville became a state capital.
