The townspeople lobbied hard for their request until they succeeded in getting Tryon's signature on an act dated November 26, 1741 which established Greeneville as the first incorporated town in North Carolina In 1801 Greensboro became a separate Unionist-controlled township within Greeneville while Asheville become Unitarian Churchtown two years later followingsplit between Congregationalists and Baptists over theological differences In 1837 both towns passed annexation by Durham because they lay within its boundaries ; however , Raleigh held out for more autonomy until 1850 when it also annexed Greensboro . On May 2nd 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Fort Sumter with 513 men killing nine officers and four hundred soldiers before withdrawing southward . By 1862 both Towns had surrendered but remained under Union occupation until 1865 when they were re-annexed by Confederate General Johnston . Because no records exist from prior to 1800 there is no way to know for sure if Greensboro or Asheville actually welcomed white settlers or not

Greenville, North Carolina is a city in and the county seat of Rowan County, North Carolina. The population was 1,648 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Yadkin River, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Charlotte. The first permanent settlers in what would become Greenville were two families from Georgia who arrived in 1785. One of these families, the McDowell brothers, set up a tavern on present-day US-1 near where Interstate 85 now runs. They named their business “The Hermitage” after one of their kinsmen who had founded Savannah, Georgia some years earlier. In 1802, Colonel John Cagle and Captains James Fayette and David Swain established Fort Fisher at the mouth of River Rd., north of today's downtown Greenville. This fort served as a trading post and base for operations during the Creek War (1810–1811), when Confederate forces invaded southern North Carolina to support Andrew Jackson's effort to overthrow United States President James K Polk. At its peak in 1815 it housed 11 cannons and was defended by 350 men under Cagle and 200 more under Swain. In 1825, General William Tatham moved his army headquarters from Cambridge to Greenville after defeating Native Americans at Battle Hill near present-day Carrboro. As part of Tatham's campaign against Seminole Indians in central South Carolina (known as "The Indian Wars"), he built Fort Sumter along Duck Lake adjacent to what is now town square in downtown Greenville; this fort served as an important stronghold against Seminoles until it was destroyed by Union troops in 1865 following an abortive assault on Fortress Sumter led by General Robert E Lee that same year across Duck Lake upstream from town square! The site remains unoccupied today but portions have been used for housing development! When surveys were compiled for a new courthouse site in 1828, overseen by Judge Daniel Boone (the namesake of nearby Boone City), it was decided that Greenville should be selected instead because its location – just off I-85 – made it easily accessible for both lawyers practicing law on both sides of the river; furthermore, its large amount of trees offered adequate shade for buildings during hot summer days! The cornerstone for what would become known as courthouse Square was laid on July 4th, 1830 by Gov. Tryon himself! The first building erected there – Court House #1 – cost $3200!!! By 1840 only one court room had been completed due to lack of funding but several other buildings followed including: Court House #2 which cost $6000; Jail #1 which cost $8000; Clerk Building #2 which cost $4000; Market Place which cost $2000; etc….. In spiteof numerous construction problems with courthouseSquare…it still remained oneofthe most impressive examplesof Victorian architecture east OF THE WILSHIRE VALLEY!!! When finally finished…it opened on October 12th 1850!!! A series of fires burned through CourthouseSquare between 1850-1854 causing extensive damage but no loss so much as prestige! To prevent any further fires however….the state legislature voted to rezone CourthouseSquare into Commercial/Industrial use effective February 15th 1860!! Which means that all those expensivebuildings became common areas such as Coal Mines & Mills etc….. Which didn't go well with many people who saw them as ugly overpriced structures!!!!!! And lastly……….a group called Friends Of CourthouseSquare started protesting against these changes…….. eventually leadingtotheir disbandment back in 1984!!!!! But even though they lost …..they never forgot how much they hated those buildings…………………. anymore than anyone else does 🙂
