Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, and the county seat of Wake County. The population was 166,844 at the 2010 census. In 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early occupied Greenville during his campaign against Union General Robert Ewell and took many items from local gunsmiths including rifles and pistols manufactured by John Waddell & Sons Arms Company located on Wilson Street across from City Hall. A few years later when white supremacists burned down Waddell's building in what is now Downtown Greenville, it was learned that some members of Early's army had acquired weapons from local dealers while he occupied town - this event led to guns being tightly regulated throughout South Carolina until after Reconstruction.. Greenville, North Carolina is a city located in the state of North Carolina. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Greenville is the seat of Gaston County and is the largest city within Gaston County by population. It is also one of two cities in NC that have been designated as "Cities of Opportunity" by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Cahaba River forms much of Greenville's eastern border and runs through it along its length. The river has served as an important water source for many years and continues to be so today. One reason why Greenville has been able to attract so many businesses and entrepreneurs is its humid subtropical climate which allows for year-round growth without extremes in temperature or humidity. Greenville was founded on December 12, 1799 by Captain William Jones while he was commanding a detachment from Colonel James Johnston's Regiment during the American Revolutionary War. Jones named his new settlement after General Nathanael Greene who had led British forces into America during the Battle of Saratoga. After initially failing to gain favor with local landowners, Jones started to prosper from his business ventures in 1801 when he built a mill on Catawba Creek which became known as "the Rice Mill." In 1811, he partnered with Samuel Smith and began construction on what would become known as Greeneville Plantation which would later be renamed Bertrams Plantation after their son-in-law John Bertrams. In 1827, Captain John Seddon erected a cotton gin atwhat would become known as Seddon's Landing on Catawba Creek while still underCaptain Jones' ownership. This gin became one of the largest cotton gins in history and helped spur economic development around Greensboro before eventually being bought out by Southern Pacific Railroad in 1915. In 1911, Tennessee Congressman George Wills purchased Bertrams Plantation from Captain John Seddon for $165,000 including land grants totaling over 6 square miles (15 km²). At this point, Bertrams plantation included more than 100 slaves who were growing crops such as rice and tobacco alongside their own families back home in Africa where they continued to work until abolition took effect six years later on January 1st 1865 when Emancipation Proclamation came into effect beginning Reconstruction across America following the Civil War ended slavery throughout most southern states except Georgia where it continued until freedmen regained full citizenship four years later on November 12th 1870 under President Ulysses S Grant
