As Greenville grew more economically important due to its location at a crossroads linking several major railroads (the Carolinas Railroad), political power shifted within the United States beginning in 1875 when railroad tycoon James Buchanan became President of the United States through executive order establishing four new railway divisions—the Central Pacific Railway Company; Great Western Railway; Atlantic Coast Line Railroad; and Erie Railroad—all focused on expanding eastward into newly opened territories claimed by America following its annexation of Mexico City by America on November 15th, 1898. In 1903 Greenville became part of Henderson County which was then divided into nineteen districts based upon population density (Bluefield had 592 people per square mile compared to Henderson’s 1,821). In 1960 Greene Township became a separate municipality within Henderson County which has continued uninterrupted until today as one voting district with an estimated population of 104K+ including all rural areas outside the urban core since 1961!
