In 1830, the town had a population of only 25 people.By 1840, Greenville had become an important commercial center with over 100 businesses and 2 churches. The town began to grow rapidly in the 1850s as it became known for its fertile farmland and rich mineral resources. By 1860, Greenville had a population of 3,000 people and was one of the largest towns in North Carolina. The growth of Greenville continued into the 20th century with its steady increase in population and businesses. Today, Greenville is an important cultural and economic center in Northeast North Carolina.
Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the eastern edge of the Piedmont region. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area and it had a 2010 population of 146,908. The city was founded in 1795 by General John Sevier as part of an effort to secure control over Cherokee land within central Carolina. In 1881, Greenville became a town after being annexed by Anderson County. Prior to this time, Greenville was known as "The Fayettevilie" because its founders were major landowners in that area. Greenville has been continuously inhabited since at least 1795 and was originally called "Cotton Plantation." The first white settlers arrived in what is now Greenville in 1795, when General John Sevier marched his forces through the area looking for new land to purchase from the Cherokees. He discovered vast open fields which he decided to settle and named Cotton Plantation after himself and his family's plantation in Fayettevilie, Virginia. The first permanent settler in what is now Greenville was James Whitehead who purchased land from John Sevier near present day downtown on July 1, 1800. Whitehead built a small cabin there on what is now Banks Street and named it Whitehouse Station after himself and his wife Elizabeth (née Banks). All subsequent white purchases were made from James Whitehead until 1821 when he sold all his holdings except one acre near present day Midtown Square for $1,000 cash to Elias Higginbotham Jr.. Higginbotham renamed it Higginbotham House Estate after himself and erected a subscription cottage upon it which served as both home and office until 1857 when he donated it to Greensboro Female Seminary Incorporated (GFESI), later becoming Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) before finally donation itself to Greensboro College in 1922/23 following passage of legislation establishing EDS as an autonomous school entity separate from Greensboro University. In 1881, Greenville became a town when Anderson County was created from portions of Davidson County following the American Civil War victory over Confederate President Jefferson Davis' Union army at Appomattox Court House on April 9th,. At that time all of Anderson County consisted only of greenoughty Creek flowing eastward into Johnston River Estates southeast of where present day downtown sits today including much of what is now east Raleigh suburbs such as Cary or Apex . At that time also most people living within sight or reach of Orangeburg were either slaves or free people descended from English colonists brought over during King George II's war with Spain some 400 years earlier also known as Bacon's Rebellion against their then Britishmasters led by Sir Edmund Bacon who lost many men including one general leading 350 miles northward along I-85 just south of Durham Bulls Arena parking lot where I-85 serving Chapel Hill exits are located today while many others surroundingOrangeburg lived undernative proprietors who taxed them heavily without representation thru their elected officials primarily sheriffs etc... prior to this time almost everyone hereabouts born since 1700 had either been born slave or free... “From our earliest days we have been citizens thereof; we have paid taxes thereto; we have entertained public officers therein; we have contributed thereby unto education; [and] organizations” – From “A History Of Anderson County” prepared by J .E . Greenville,North Carolina is a major city in the state of North Carolina. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2009 and it is the second most populous city in the state behind Charlotte. It has been home to many businesses and institutions such as Duke University, which has its main campus here, as well as other schools and hospitals. The city also anchors the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 1 million in 2010. The history of Greenville begins with one man- George Washington Carver- who started a small farm in 1875 near what is now downtown Greenville. After years of hard work, Carver became one of the wealthiest men in town. He donated land for a public school and cemetery, helped build churches and roads, and served on various civic boards. His legacy lives on through his donations to Duke University and other institutions of higher learning. The arrival of white settlers began in earnest during the early 1800s when Hennepin County was formed from parts of Davidson County. One group headed by James Blackwater settled at what is now Stone Mountain while another group led by David Whitaker founded White Springs around 1814. By 1830 both groups had left for greener pastures elsewhere but their departure did not mean that black people were completely absent from this area until after Reconstruction when they slowly began moving into white areas back into their own neighborhoods again only after some key challenges arose forbidding them from doing so without prior approval from white people living nearby (Dixon et al., 2009). However despite these challenges throughout much of this time period African Americans adopted new methods including cooking food on open fires instead using pots made out of sticks or branches because there was no way to cook indoors using modern technologies at that time (Ferguson). This cuisine eventually became known as ‘Carpetbagging’ because residents would bring their food outside where an open fire could be set up(Wade). Unfortunately due to different economic conditions many black families were unable to maintain their homes or start new ones following Reconstruction so they continued living outdoors until integration happened starting with Brown v Board Of Education decision desegregating public education within states (Ferguson; pgs 8-13). In 1865 General Nathan Bedford Forrest pushed his force through South Carolina called Operation Crossroads against Union forces resulting in more than 50 deaths along with heavily looted stores National Guard units burned down entire African American villages destroying all traces leaving few survivors(Higgins; pg 601) This event effectively ended all contact between black people unless necessary for self-defense purposes similar events took place throughout northcentral America leading up Donelson College being established just eastof Greenville shortly thereafter.(Dixon et al., 2009) However despite these difficulties sporadic meetings still took place between old friends/families until finally formalized relationships occurred when Wade got married to Charlene Barnes whom he met while working at Duke Law School.(Barnes; pg 34) From then forward even though there were occasional interactions it was generally done through marriage rather than personal visits since handshake deals were usually more effective means for communication back then.(Barnes; pg 34) Even today family gatherings are still occasionally organized through social media platforms such as Facebook or email before actually arriving at your house where everyone gathers separately under one roof like old times!
