Greenville, North Carolina is a city in the historic and present-day U.S. state of North Carolina that is the seat of Cumberland County. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. Greenville was founded in 1784 by General James Moore as a small town on Catawba River near what is now downtown Greenville. It became an American military base during the Revolutionary War and served as a key staging area for General George Washington's march to Yorktown in 1781. In 1819, Greenville became capital of Cumberland County and has been its largest city since then. The city was named after Colonel John Green, who helped create Cumberland County in 1784 and laid out its boundaries. The first land grant in what is now Greenville was to Colonel Nicholas Boudinot on March 26, 1786; he also donated land for a courthouse and other public buildings. On July 24, 1800, President Thomas Jefferson purchased from Colonel John Green 640 acres (2 km²) of forested land east of downtown Greensboro for $10 per acre ($160/km²). This included much of what later became known as "Cumberland Forest". When Confederate forces burned down Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 – during the Civil War – Union soldiers burned down parts of Cumberland Forest to prevent it from falling into Confederate hands. After United States troops arrived in Greensboro to protect civilian residents from Confederate shelling during the Battle of Mayflower Bridge on October 16–17, 1862 (), Governor Elias Boone called for martial law throughout central NC following concerns about possible slave raiding by Confederates under General Robert Ewell (). A curfew was put into effect at 5 pm each night until further notice; any person found outside or having any communication with slaves would be arrested and jailed without bail or trial until proceedings could be brought against them before a court-martial or beyond that date up to life imprisonment without hard labor if convicted (). The curfew allowed Federal troops some limited protection from slave raids but did not prevent them from being used against unarmed civilians by local militia groups such as those led by Colored Troops Battalion #1 (later known as United States Colored Troops) commander Major Josephus Daniels () or Lieutenant Colonel William Horry (). Between 1863 and 1865 General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded central NC using his cavalry units while raiding plantations south of Asheville (); many people were killed or captured when Forrest's forces reached Greensboro early on November 25th (). Afterward most black residents left town ; however one group – African Americans organized around Captain Benjamin Butler () – refused to leave even though their homes were destroyed by Confederate artillery fire just minutes after they had surrendered their weapons to Butler's men During World War II most active manufacturing took place within 10 miles (16 km) of Greensboro except for munitions production inside enemy lines which took place outside US borders In 1946 Greensboro became the first municipality in North Carolina to toes the line between State government functions domestic services such as education through county commissioners including developmentally disabled citizens housed within our City Schools only when these services are necessary due no less than 60% voter approved passing measure . In 1957 City Council enacted Ordinance No 2 providing racial integration busing program for all citizens K-12th grade female students attending schools located within walking distance thereof free educational meals provided homebound attenders during school hours
