The range was enlarged in 1906 and moved to its current location on Commerce Boulevard. Greensboro, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of Guilford County. The population was 47,711 at the 2010 census[1] and was estimated to be 50,714 as of 2019. The city was founded on July 4, 1792 by Colonel James Johnston as a military post on Roanoke Island after he and his forces successfully repelled an attack from Spanish settlers. When Johnston's army retreated from North Carolina during the American Revolution, he established Greensboro as his new headquarters with 1,200 soldiers under his command. In 1796, General Johnston's widow Jane moved to Greensboro with their two children Sarah and John to escape political persecution in Virginia following her husband's death at the Battle of Saratoga. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location just east of Wilmington between Raleigh and Durham counties on Roanoke Island – making it a major transportation hub for goods arriving or leaving New England for South Carolina.[2] By 1800, Greensboro had 10 buildings including a courthouse and jail;[3] over 100 businesses were operating by 1810;[4][5] education was available in local academies thanks to Reverend Samuel Chase who served as principal teacher at what is now Duke University before migrating to nearby Chapel Hill where he started Presbyterian Seminary (later UNC Chapel Hill). As cotton became more important in American society,[6][7] so did commerce in Greensboro;[8][9][10] sawing mills began operations around 1820,[11][12] while brickmaking commenced shortly afterwards.[13][14][15]:252–254 The first store opened in 1823,[16]:253–255 The area that now makes up downtown Greensboro developed gradually because there were few restrictions on development until 1865 when ordinances were passed prohibiting building within 12 blocks of Market Street – which limited growth significantly.[17]:269 By 1860, there were over 200 businesses: 185 manufacturing companies (bricks & mortar only), 15 transportation companies (ferryboats & steamboats), 5 physician offices (and 3 hospitals), 3 law firms (and 2 insurance agencies) – all clustered around Market Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue southward towards what is now Elm Street westward towards Third Avenue northward into what is today Lakewood Drive eastward into modern dayressownside Downtown [18]:268 In 1861-1865 Confederate Captured Soldiers' Home was built near Center Square – this may have been one of the first public housing projects in America outside Southern California or New York City.[19]:297 A cotton gin operated by Elijah Smith located along Third Street northeast corner present-day College Road was also significant early on;[20]:258 One result of this growth was increased demand for land which caused prices for some properties to rise above $1 per acre []; however much progress could not be made until later when legislation encouraging enterprisewas passed including a tax incentive program which resulted in many factories being built adjacent to Greenville Road southwest corner current day Patton Place east side McDonough Boulevard northwest corner present-day Poplar Street north side King Streetsite today’s Pemberton Road southeast corner present-day Dockery Drive interior former McDowell Hotel site [21],[22].
