When Johnston's army invaded North Carolina during the American Civil War (1861-65), parts of Randolph County joined forces with Johnston's army while others remained loyal to Confederate General Robert Ewell; GreenSBorne consequently became an early stronghold for pro-Union sentiment within newly freed African Americans living in Northern Virginia and Carolinas before Union soldiers burned it down on April 12, 1865—the day after Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House. During Reconstruction (1868-1912), Greensboro played an important role as a center for black political activity and education after Reconstruction Mobile National Battlefield Park opened there in 1924 commemorating Ulysses S. Grant's visit here during that period of change across America following Reconstruction. For most of its history until World War II, however, it was one of America’s largest white working class cities with limited access to education or job opportunities for its citizens despite being adjacent to Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area which had far greater economic development potential than Greensboro at that time due to its location near major railroad lines and other select industrial sites such as coal mines, car plants (including two Alcoa smelters operated by Morgan Iron Works), textile mills ( plantations were also developed nearby), agricultural production (farms were established southcentral greensborough) - all industrythat would give Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Area significant competitive advantages over Greensboro through the rest of the twentieth century."
