Greensboro, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina located on the banks of the Catawba River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 154,814. The city is part of Greensboro-Winston-Salem metropolitan area and is included in the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Combined Statistical Area. In 1819, Raleigh became capital of this newly created county when Moore's original government center moved from Wilmington to Raleigh due to financial problems at that location caused by an influx of Federalists after their victory in the Virginia gubernatorial election of 1800 (which then made Raleigh the capital). By 1827 Greenville had also become county seat; however, because Durham County was formed out of Johnston County only two years later, most local governmental activity took place within Johnston County until 1834 when Durham County was split into two parts – one part becoming Winston-Salem while another part became Greensboro proper (the older part still forms much of downtown today). Greensboro is a city in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Greensboro is part of the Raleigh-Durham–Fayetteville metropolitan area. The site for Greensboro was chosen by surveyors because its location—on both sides of the Yadkin River—made it an ideal place to found a new town or city. At first only men could vote in local government elections but this soon changed with women coming to live in Greensboro from surrounding villages starting in 1800. By 1825 most citizens were white male landowners who rented land from other white landowners orslaveowners and so voting rights were based upon property ownership rather than race or ethnicity which helped solidify Southern Reconstruction during that time period when African Americans didn't have full citizenship rights under Ulysses S Grant's Reconstruction Era America until 1865 following Vandalism against Confederate military installations throughout much of South Carolina (which led to Bloody Sunday December 14th1865 when Confederate troops massacred black residents near Goldsborough)). In 1827 violence broke out between whites and native American Indians over control of some Native American hunting grounds around what would later become downtown Greensboro; this led to British soldiers being called into action to quell the situation known as "Greensboro Massacre". Aftermath saw many people killed including several white settlers; however no Indian was ever brought to trial for any role in this atrocity which unfortunately paved way for further discrimination against Native Americans by Northerners during their own Jim Crow era timeslot throughout most southern states during that time period). In 1840 James White established himself as one of North Carolina’s leading farmers by moving his family from Virginia’s Tidewater region where he had been born into slaveholding aristocracy to central North Carolina where he grew up on tobacco plantations near Wilmington.
