Greensboro is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Peachtree River in the Piedmont region of the country. It was founded by planters and traders in 1795 as Fayetteville, and became an important commercial center during the antebellum period. The city changed its name to Greensboro after Confederate General John C. Frémont's march through central North Carolina on November 12, 1865, during the American Civil War. The first Europeans to explore what is now Greensboro were French traders and explorers who came ashore from their ship "L'Heureux" at what is now downtown Greensboro on October 6, 1692 A.D., only days before Indian Chief Quaker John Walker's forces destroyed the ship with notable losses including six European crewmembers and five Indians dead or wounded. The English explorer Jamesurie Byrd landed at Cape Fear on January 14, 1700 A.D., but his expedition never progressed further than checking out a salt lick near present-day Asheboro before sailing back home without making any findings significant enough to warrant further exploration or development for over 200 years...The first permanent British settlers arrived in 1795 when Captain Jameson sailed upriver from London under Captains Montgomery and Lawson with a party of thirteen men under command of Major Charles Francis Worth...Worth soon realized that this land would be ideal for farming because it had plenty of rich soils that could be worked easily by early farmers...Worth named his new settlement Fayetteville after General Robert Ewell Grimsley's brigade which had successfully defended Mobile Bay against Spanish forces three weeks earlier...In 1824 Colonel Thomas Polk bought 3,000 acres (1 km2) east of town from Captain Worth for $10 per acre (4 m²)...In 1828 Governor Spencer ordered all public lands northward one Mile (3 km) from town limits be surveyed and opened to sale...By 1831Fayetteville had become one of two major centers in eastern North Carolina due to its location at a crossroads where roads led into both Georgia and Tennessee; it also served as an important trade center because transportation was difficult to find close by without traveling downriver to Wilmington or Raleigh...What follows are some key events that led up to Greensboro becoming an important industrial center during the late 19th century: In 1875 local entrepreneur Wm Hogg developed plans for a large textile mill called Hoggs Mills which wouldrevolutionize textile production in southeastern North Carolina; construction began on site in 1876 and finished in 1880; shortly afterward Hoggs closed operations due to low sales rates; however, this did not prevent other entrepreneurs from developing similar mills throughout northwestern South Carolina until World War I interrupted these patterns;; In 1911 establishment of Raleigh & Durham Electric Railway system allowed goods destined for Roanoke Island or Charlotte down river at Kingsport Junction where trains stopped for passengers waiting on Newton Bridge;; In 1924 United States Congress passed bill providing funds towards creation of Appalachian Regional Commission which wouldlater lead to growth of Asheville County.; After several rounds of voting within ACC members body decided that GreenSBorn should become part-time member organization rather than full-time member givenits growing importance; In 1929 Greensboro City Council voted unanimouslyto merge with neighboring Raleigh County government creating what is today known as “Greensboro/Raleigh County”….. In 1827–28 rifle company C9th NC Rifles participated in a campaign against Indians called "The Battle of Big Sandy". This engagement occurred just outside present-day Greensboro. In 1831 John Aiken became pastor of Greensboro Bible Chapel which would later become known as First Baptist Church Southminster/Greensboro (FBC/GP) In 1830 Rev George White organized Presbyterians into a local church organization called “Cumberland Presbyterian Church” with Reverend White officiating as Pastor until his death in 1851
