Greensboro is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 179,827 at the 2010 census. Greensboro is the seventh-largest city in North Carolina and one of the fastest-growing cities in America, with a population growth rate of over 8%. The current mayor is Roy Cooper and the City Council has a total of 21 members. The area now known as Greensboro was settled by English colonists in 1736 as part of what would become British North Carolina. It became an independent municipality on February 14, 1868, when it seceded from Johnston County to form Durham County. On January 1, 1886, GreenSBoro annexed much of Catawba County and its surrounding rural areas eastward from Pender Street to make up its new urban territory. In 1903, when Raleigh was founded as the capital ofNorth Carolina due to increased political power within New South Wales following their annexation of Queensland that year, Raleigh recommended that Greensboro be named its capital because it had been "the most important textile center in eastern North Carolina" for many years prior to this point and "the commercial center around which all other activities took place." In 1912 Gatlinburg became the first town west of Interstate 85 to become incorporated as a municipality within Tennessee; however GreenSBoro continued to exist until 1957 when it merged into Gaston County effective July 1st despite protests from residents who wanted their town retained as an individual municipality separate from Gaston County's larger population base. On November 3rd 1914 referendum voters in GreenSBoro voted against incorporation into Gaston county because they felt that it would have resulted in less tax revenue for their town while also effecting its separation from Gaston county via annexation by neighboring counties (which did not take place). After more than 20 years living separately under different jurisdictions within Tennessee and Georgia (Gaston County had long been considered one large county), on May 2nd 1921 GreenSBoro finally became an unincorporated community once again with voting rights granted back to its citizens through legislation passed by the North Carolina General Assembly on June 7th 1921 called "An Act To Amend An Ordinance Making Incorporation And Election Of Members Of Municipal Corporations In Greenestown Township". This act allowed any neighborhood or community located within 1/4 mile (1 km) radius of either downtown Greensboro or Catawba Mall – two key business districts – automatic membership status in municipal corporations formed there pursuant thereto regardless of whether such neighborhoods or communities possessed any formal governing institutions save for occasional meetings between local officials and village trustees serving largely ceremonial functions at which time decisions were made by consensus rather than by vote cast by residents directly elected through ballot box

Greensboro is a city in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 37,787 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gaston County and the second-most populous city in the state after Raleigh. Greensboro's rich history dates back to 1737 when an Englishman named Colonel John Morgan founded a trading post on New Bern Island off what is now downtown Greensboro. In 1845, General Andrew Johnson established Johnson Barracks as the first military installation in America outside of Washington D.C., and it became a commercial center for goods shipped from southern Europe. By 1865, Greensboro had become known as "The Birthplace of American Civil War." From 1865 until 1886, it served as the seat of government for 21 counties in eastern Gaston County (later Johnston County), including both Johnston and Charlotte Counties which were part of South Carolina before their Unionization into North Carolina during Reconstruction. During that time period, Greenville became one of the largest cities in America and its industries grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major railroads –the Carolina Railroad andthe Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad –and its close proximity to Confederate forces stationed throughout Eastern North Carolina during that time period. At one point during this timeperiod, Greensboro was home to more than 30 thousand residents. However, by 1887 local hostilities over taxes led to open warfare betweenUnion troops garrisoned in nearby Durhamtown (now Chapel Hill) and Confederate troops stationed around town; this battle took place near what is now Prentiss Square downtown Greensboro. Ultimately Union forces emerged victorious and by 1890 Greensboro had reverted back to being an agricultural center with about 10 percentof its population engaged in manufacturing activities compared with 60 percent involved in agriculture or services

It also gained notoriety for being one of the few U.S. cities to support Iwo Jima during World War II. After the war, Greensboro experienced a period of growth and transformation that led to it becoming one of the most vibrant cities in North Carolina today.
