Greensboro is home to the world's first handgun range, opened in 1892. In 1906, the city of Greensboro established its first police department and began issuing firearms to law enforcement officers. These studies resulted in passage of several controversial pieces of gun control legislation – such as the Brady Bill which required background checks for all firearm purchases and repeal of Prohibition – that remain influential today. The gunshot that killed 22 people in Parkland, Florida, on February 14th was the deadliest shooting in the United States since the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. Greensboro is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 137,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Guilford County. Greensboro is the sixth-largest city in North Carolina and has been designated as a global city by the United Nations Development Programme. The first inhabitants of what is now Greensboro were Native Americans who lived near what is now downtown. In 1814, Englishman John Carteret founded an advance post for British troops on land that he had purchased from the Cherokee nation. This site became known as Carteret's Island after him and eventually became part of Greensboro. The town began to form from large families who bought or rented parcels of land here between 1815 and 1830. By 1840, over 50% of all residential property in town had been built. In 1850, a group of businessmen formed a company to build Turnpike Road through present day Greensboro and Asheville (then known as Orange County). They named their new road "The Greenville & Charlotte Railroad", which later became part of the Southern Railway system throughout the south before being acquired by Ulysses S Grant's E&M Company in 1876. At this time, many African Americans worked on various construction projects throughout downtown Greensboro including turning logs into rails for stockyards on nearby Brown Street while also working in textile mills located along Turnpike Road outside today's downtown area. On July 1, 1865, during Confederate General Robert Easley's Raid on Raleigh/Durham area Joint Base Camp Johnston (JBJC), Union forces under General Jubal Early attacked downtown Greensboro with overwhelming success resulting in almost two hundred casualties among Confederate forces only eight members of JBJC's command were killed or wounded including General Easley himself; this event marked an escalation in Union efforts to breach Confederate lines at home front and ultimately achieve victory over Confederate forces across much southern territory following Richmond Siege operations preceding Appomattox Court House surrendering April 9th 1865 Shortly thereafter Congregationalists organized themselves into churches around town with Reverend James White serving as their pastor until his death in 1873 followed by Reverend Daniel Webster until his own death in 1901 leaving behind an influential church constituency within central North Carolina A new courthouse was completed Downtown during 1893–1894 utilizing funds provided by local philanthropist Samuel Huston which served as both court house and business center for numerous businesses such as banks and petrochemical plants that dot today’s streetscape South Boulevard was renamed “Washington Street” honoring then President George Washington who visited town during his stay at Wilson Park prior to his inauguration on January 20th 1789 becoming one of only five American presidents visiting Raleigh during its formative years leading up to statehood As early20th century progressed various technological advancements led to increased commerce conducted online via World Wide Web with many local companies established such examples include NC Data Systems Incorporated (later absorbed into Microsoft Corporation) which operated outta buildings located along Main Street called The Domain until acquisition by NCSoft Corporation ceasing operations within couple years later due primarily to increase competition from larger technology firms although original mainframe facility still extant inside building currently usedby University thereof since 1985

In 1960s Greensboro experienced rapid growth due to textile production at local mills including those operated by Textron (now Belk) Corporation until these closures in the early 2000s plagued Greensboro with high levels of pollution from factories that used hazardous materials like lead and asbestos

The town grew rapidly and by 1853 it had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1881, Greensboro became the capital of North Carolina and the seat of government for all of the state. In 1924, it was renamed Charlotte after Queen Victoria's visit to America.
