Greensboro is a city in and the county seat of Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 146,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Greensboro is home to UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Alamance County were French colonists who arrived in 1711. They named their land Nouvelle Ile de la Paix (New Isle of Peace). The town of Greensboro was founded by Lieutenant Colonel William Tryon on February 14, 1795 as a temporary military post on the Neuse River near present-day Gates Mill. The new town was named for General Nathanael Greene, governor of Virginia at the time. In 1801, Tryon sold his interest in Greensboro to James Fenton for $5,000 cash. In 1819, Fenton changed the name to Greenville and built a brick courthouse which still stands today. In 1830, Jesse Grimes bought 1/2 acre (0.20 km2) of land east of present-day downtown Greensboro from John Whitehead for $25 per acre ($100 per hectare). Grimes began farming this land until he moved it to his current location in 1865 when he developed what became known as "the district." Today's growth has been largely due to suburban development within walking distance of campus since the early 1990s when numerous medical research institutions announced plans to move into or expand their campuses into adjacent neighborhoods; many others followed suit over time as Raleigh – Durham grew increasingly competitive with Chapel Hill for economic and educational advantages relative to its smaller sister city. In 2007–2008 alone more than $1 billion was invested in real estate across North Carolina through housing developments and other types of investment including condemnation filings that identify properties available for purchase within two years should all conditions required by developers be met; this included 563 properties throughout Alamance County! The Greensboro area was first settled in the 17th century by English colonists. The earliest known reference to Greensboro is from 1692, when a group of English settlers named it "Greensborough." In 1801, the Georgia Railroad was built through the area, and soon there were heavy industry and population growth. By 1835, Greensboro had become an important town in northwestern North Carolina. A cotton gin was erected in 1836 in what is now downtown Greensboro, and in 1840 an experimental college was established at what is now UNC-Greensboro. In 1865, the Union army invaded North Carolina during the American Civil War, and for two years GreenSBorne suffered great losses; many people died or were captured along with their homes and stores. After Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865, most of Raleigh's industrial areas became slave states as the war ended. However, some parts of Raleigh continue to be textile mills until this day (e.g., Reynoldstown). After Reconstruction ended in America following the end of World War II, Greensboro experienced significant economic growth as its black majority sought opportunity beyond segregation laws that still existed at that time. In 1957 The University of North Carolina System moved its main campus from Chapel Hill to Greensboro after decades of debate over which city would be selected as UNC's new home due to government autonomous concerns about race relations unfolding nationally at that time (the system eventually moved to Durham). In 1959 construction began on what would become Beechwood Tower – one of world's tallest towers until it burned down in 2006 – and shops opened up around Interstate 35W near downtown GreenSBorne amid much celebration across town for what would come later called "The rebirth of downtown". This revitalization led to increased development around Interstate 35W including apartments and condos being built along both sides of highway while jobs flowed into the area from surrounding businesses such as engineering firms specializing in high-rise construction/office buildings/other large projects (the CBD redevelopment project also included a major hotel complex on PNC Park property adjacent to I-35W). In 1978–79 local author Truman Capote lived for several months while writing his novel In Cold Blood near downtown GreenSBorne before returning home and completing work on book elsewhere before publishing it in 1980
