Today, it remains one of America’s most diverse cities with over 50 languages being spoken here including English, Spanish, Chinese, African American, Italian and Vietnamese. The history of Greensboro began with Scotchman John Sevier who arrived in North Carolina in 1795 seeking new land for settlement after his family’s home country became embroiled in war with Spain. He purchased 8 acres (3 ha) near what would become downtown Greensboro from Nicholas Sparks on July 15th, 1796. From this small piece of land he started construction on a new house that would serve as his headquarters for many years; he named it “New Town Hall” because he had no idea where else it could be built! In 1802–03 Mr. Sevier leased 5 more acres (2 ha) from Drury Lewis for $200 per year – making him oneof America’s first self-employed developers! ernest Hoke Sr., founder of First Baptist Church which still meets today within walking distance from New Town Hall said about GreenSBoro: It can be said that our ancestor's foresight inspired us to build anew here today into something great – an inclusive community committed to social justice and environmental sustainability

Greensboro was founded in 1755 by the Reverend James Robertson and his wife, who named it after their home of Girdlestone in Scotland. The town became an important port on the Pee Dee River and prospered as a cotton plantation center. In 1845, Greensboro became one of the first towns in North Carolina to be recipient of a congressional charter. It grew rapidly as a manufacturing and commercial center until the early 20th century when it lost its significance due to growth outside of Raleigh. Today, Greensboro is a primarily residential community with a small commercial district located on Interstate 95 opposite downtown.
