Greensboro, North Carolina is home to the oldest firearms manufacturing and trade center in the United States. The city was founded by Captain John Smeaton in 1795 as a trading post on Catawba River. After two centuries of growth, Greensboro became an important center for firearms production in the early 1900s. In 1882, Colonel Samuel Colt purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown Greensboro and began construction on the first batch of handguns made in America, known today as Colt revolvers. Throughout its history, Greensboro has been a hotspot for gun culture and shooting sports. In 1951, NRA member Major General William Custer opened Custer's Rifle & Pistol Shop in downtown Greensboro. This was the first business in town to sell rifles and shotguns online. From here, Custer offered customers smooth operating actions and beautiful wood-fired pistols that still make an appearance at local events today. In 1934, entrepreneur Floyd Lee set up his own firearms company called National Firearms Corporation (NFC) in downtown Greensboro with the goal of creating American industry leader in handgun manufacture and sales. Today NFC manufactures Marlin Sportsman rifles, shotguns and pistols under several brand names including Smith & Wesson®, Winchester®, Beretta® handguns and Ruger® revolvers.

For many years, Hats had been the go-to headwear for men in the town. In 1876, a hat company was started in Greensboro by Jno. Aiken. From that time until 1911, Hats were the primary type of headwear worn in Greensboro. In 1911, a new type of hat became popular in Greensboro thanks to Major Johnnie Leland who designed it specifically for the townspeople. The hat was called the “Greensboro Girl” Hat and it was made from a soft felt material with a band around its brim that helped keep your head cool while you wore it. It became very popular and remain so to this day!

It is located on the Research Triangle region of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill. Greensboro has been called "the economic engine" of eastern North Carolina for many years and its metropolitan area has a GDP per capita higher than that of any other large metro area in the United States. The town first appeared as an English settlement on May 12, 1737, when Sir Charles Eden approached what is now Greensboro from Cherokee Nation territory to trade furs with them. The town's name was given to it by General James Johnston who renamed it after Major General Nathanael Greene during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). When Johnston's army lost Battle of Guilford Court House on October 15, 1781, Greeneville became almost deserted due to his command's retreat into Virginia following their victory over British forces under Prince George Washington at Yorktown two weeks earlier. A few families continued to live there until 1800 when they were displaced by more development around Chapel Hill and Durham respectively. In 1864, John Covington opened a cotton gin in nearby Union Mills which had some Brunswickers working its machines but no one living near it because most people then worked in larger cities north or south of Raleigh so there was little commerce or industry hereabouts In 1868 South Carolina seceded from the Union and began issuing Confederate money known as Confederate Notes which led to problems for businesses owners trying to sell goods or services outside their states boundaries In 1870 NC passed an act allowing African Americans access to public education which caused great tension within white society about integrating black citizens into white society American Civil War veteran Lieutenant Colonel William Tuggle decided to start a business selling supply items needed for Reconstruction in Greeneville he named "Tuggle’s Store" Afterward Greensboro became known as "The Ginnett Center" during this time period This store later morphed into Sam’s Club before being sold again and reincarnated as JCPenney Corporation In 1925 much Progress downtown was made when new shopping malls were created including Regency Village Shopping Center (now Macy’s) along Interstate 85; Alamance Mall; also several smaller stores including Woolworths and Sears among others Growth continued until 1949 when local paper mill closed leaving behind only small stores downtown While much progress was made during these early decades Greensboro remained largely rural with few notable developments until World War II brought about rapid growth in housing prices spurred by military construction jobs throughout Onslow County resulting in increased suburbanization east of I-85 As recently as 2000 one out four residents lived inside Ofslow County while only 2% lived within commuting distance To wit: 100% lived within five miles – both major cities have over 50% residents who reside closer than 5 miles To wit: 95% live within 10 miles – all 3 largest counties have over 25% residents who reside closer than 10 miles For those readers who are interested what type concentration areas develop hypermarkets/retail corridors are limited Other types concentration areas include high tech/servicetech clusters such as Ballantyne Pines Corporate Park encompassing Cary Research & Technology park; University City Medical District containing UNC Health Care system campuses Office Depot Center - original home of Sam’s Club & JCPenney Corporation; Brentwood Mall - serviced by Duke Energy companyPark Place Shopping Center - anchored by Sears & MCDavidson Place - anchored by Barnesand Noble
