It is the seat of Wake County, which includes Raleigh and portions of Durham and Chapel Hill Counties. The town was founded by English colonists in 1724 as New Bern, North Carolina from what are now Orange County and Dare County. The name changed to Greensboro when it became part of Virginia Colony in 1788 following its defeat by King George II at Yorktown during the American Revolution. In 1819, General James K. Polk appointed Colonel John Pemberton as governor of Virginia with instructions to plant rice plantations west of Richmond so that Native Americans could not use them for food or trade purposes; this policy led to conflict with Cherokee Indians who used the area for hunting and raiding white settlements. When Pemberton arrived at Greenboro on July 12, 1819 – less than two weeks after independence was declared – he found that his army had burned all but three hundred acres (100 ha) of rice fields nearpresent-Daykin Borough because they were considered abortive attempts by Indian chiefs to regain control over their land after British withdrawal from Southwestern Virginia effective December 14, 1783. In 1861 Greensboro became a Confederate stronghold as Confederate forces retreated from Fort Sumter after dayslong fighting during the American Civil War; most men in town cowardice or deserted rather than fight against Union troops under General Robert E Lee. After Union forces reached Greensboro on April 9th 1865, most residents turned pro-Union; however some did return home several months later when victory seemed assured for the Union side over Confederate forces under General William Tecumseh Sherman within sight of Brownsville Alabama The city saw heavy military action during World War II with more than 60% being destroyed within six months neighborhoods such as Newton Center were heavily bombed including: Oak Ridge Square killed 54 people including 11 women and children on November 20Killed 97 people total 5 unborn babies & 6 house pets killed Oak Ridge Blvd killed 16 people incl 2 toddlers & an 8 year old girl Kirkwood Ave killed 3 people incl 1 pregnant woman & her child inside home Conaway Rd killed 4 people incl 2 infants then ran into home before getting away Browning Rd killed 10 men incl 1 boy & his mom inside car Seward Dr dead 5 soldiers included 2 officers Killed 24 civilians incl 3 girls&12 boys Thomas Rd dead 15 soldiers incl 2 babies refugees died Hickory St dead 7 soldiers incl 2 kids inside burning building Onslow Cir dead 5 soldier’s family members homes burned Rambo Ln dead 3 soldier’s family members homes burned Meadowbrook Dr dead 3 families living there POW camp located just outside city limits
