The town is named for General John Graham who fought in the American Revolution. In 1835, when general Morgan Storey raided an Indian encampment near Graham, he found some powder and shot cached there by the Indians and decided to take it to Fort Sumter so as not to alarm them unnecessarily. As a result of this raid, Graham became part of the United States with its first white settlers arriving in 1836. In 1862, after Confederate forces burned down most of downtown Graham (the only city withinGraham County then), the Union Army moved into town and held it until 1865 when they abandoned it again due to lack of food and ammunition. In 1934-1935 two films were made about the history of Graham: "A History of Graham" and "The Pioneers". A new courthouse was built in 1950 which still stands today. In 1984-1985 one season of the TV show "Dynasty" was filmed here including episodes #5 & 6
