Graham is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1819 by two white men, Colleton and Yates, on land now known as Graham Road. By 1830 it had 5 families and 120 residents. In 1835, the first post office was established in Graham with three mailbags per day to serve the community of 125 residents. The first store opened in 1836 and soon there were three stores and twelve homes. In 1840, a school was built for 12 students by local farmer John Newton and his wife Julia Tatum Newton. Mrs. Newton later donated land for a Methodist church which opened in 1845 masquerading as an old log cabin until 1886 when it became Graham's new courthouse which still stands today (see photo). In 1860 Graham had a population of 2143 people; by 1870 it hadgrown to over 6500 people including 2100 children under the age of eighteen years who lived with their parents or other caregivers on family farmssteads scattered throughout the hills around town center while most adults worked on plantations outside of town limits earning paychecks that supported their families back home. Graham was founded in 1795 by brothers John and James Graham. The town was named for the Rev. John Graham, a Presbyterian minister who had come to the area in 1786. The two brothers developed a large cotton plantation, which they continued to operate until their death in 1877. They bequeathed their vast holdings to their children, who also ran the plantations until 1949. In 1930, the property became part of the University of North Carolina System and is now part of UNC-Chapel Hill. The Gralds were one of many early settlers in Grahamtown, which was located on land that had been purchased from the Lenape tribe by Captain David Hennessy and his family in 1795. The Hennessys were pioneer landowners and maintained a large farmstead within what is now Grahamtown until 1836 when they sold it to Colonel Walter Campbell whose heirs continued to live there until 1949 when it became part of UNC-Chapel Hill. During this time period, Grahamtown experienced significant development with numerous homes being built along Church Street and Tryon Road as well as several churches/schools being erected including First Presbyterian (1805), Second Presbyterian (1811), Baptist (1815), Methodist (1826) and Episcopal (1830). The Colburns lived on Chapel Hill Avenue for over 100 years before selling their home in 1951 to Dr. Julius Hafer who resided there until his death in 1984. A plaque recognizing Dr. Hafer's memory has been placed at his old residence alongside those honoring other notable figures associated with UNC-Chapel Hill during its early days including Reverend Samuel Nance Price (1792-1861), Governor Giles Pickens Ashe(1796-1848), Mayor James Mclntyre(1800-898) and Vice President George Wallace(1937-1966). In 1928, University president Wm Dean decided that Chapel Hill should become an agricultural college linked directly with UNC-Chapel Hill making Grahamtown an integral part of the university system for all citizens regardless of class or income level. This decision led to further development withinGrahamtown such as construction of both a new high school campus across Tryon Road from County Courthouse Square as well as additional housing developments around Research Park which rapidly became one of Chapel Hill's most popular areas after World War II due in part to its proximity to established businesses such as Pritchard Paper Company, DuPont laboratories and IBM plant #1! Today,Grahamtown remains a vibrant community filled with students, faculty and residents who continue to make significant contributions both locally and nationally while maintaining strong ties with each other!
Graham was founded in 1795 by John Graham and named for him. The town was originally located on the York River, but it moved to its present location in 1824. In 1907, Graham became the county seat of Graham County.
