Critics argue that such measures could actually lead to more incidents like those we experienced on December 14th, 2012 – when 20 children were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Graham is a small town located in the extreme northeast corner of North Carolina. It straddles the border of Alamance County and Orange County, making it one of the most rural areas in the state. The population was 8,829 as of 2010, down from 9,027 in 2000. The name Graham comes from a Native American word meaning either "granite" or "hill." The first settler in Graham was John Graham who arrived in 1798. In 1824, Reverend George White settled on a farm close to what is now downtown Graham. A few years later, Samuel Stephenson erected a store and tavern on Main Street inGraham. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location at an intersection with two major roadways -the Watauga Turnpike (NC-27) which ran east-west and U.S.-Route 221 which ran north-south -positions that made it easy for goods and people to move around the area. By 1830, Graham had a school, post office, jail, and three stores plus several houses. In 1833, James Latham purchased land east of Main Street from Samuel Stephenson for $2 per acre; this land became known as Latham's Corner after him. Latham built several homes there before his death in 1865. In 1871 local resident Major J W Durham donated land west of Main Street to form what is now Grove Park Cemetery; this donation helped make Graham one of the largest cemeteries in North Carolina . The town continued to grow rapidly until World War II when industry took over and jobs dried up; however, growth resumed following the war with new businesses such as restaurants and retail stores popping up throughout downtownGraham. Today DowntownGraham retains much of its historical charm including its many buildings dating back to the 1800s such as the old courthouse which was built by James Latham and still stands today adjacent to Grove Park Cemetery . Graham was a small town in North Carolina, located about twenty-five miles east of Raleigh. It was founded in 1819 by Colonel John Graham and his wife, Eliza. John Graham was born on October 12th 1784 in Forkshire Parish near Winchester Cathedral in England. He emigrated to America with his father on July 1st 1800 and settled in what is now Johnston County north of Raleigh. JohnGrahams early life was spent working on family farms while he finished high school at age sixteen He married Eliza Cline on November 3rd 1813 at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church (now part of UNC Chapel Hill). They had three children: Sarah (1814-1897), John Jr.(1816-1892), and David(1820-1901). In 1825 Colonel John Graham organized what would become the first Militia unit from western North Carolina called Company A which fought at Monck's Raid against British forces near Fort Pea Ridge outside present day Durham City . On September 25th 1827 General James Robertson ordered all cattle driven into Robeson County for winter feed purposes be burned as part of Operation Anaconda . After this event many farmers abandoned farming for raising stock rather than spend time travelling to central North Carolina for market purposes so there remained constant conflict between guerrilla warfare waged by mountain men against regular troops during these years This period also saw much growth within Graham due to its location as well as new investment opportunities both government/non government partnerships that were formed such as The United States Military Academy at West Point The late 1800’s were difficult times economically for most Americans because prices for goods increased while wages did not keep up however colonel john graces show continuing effort with some good things happening like creating community center which still exists today
Graham is located in the state of North Carolina, within the Albemarle County government area. The town was founded by early settlers in 1796. In 1868, Graham became a city and was renamed after General Ulysses S. Grant who served as the 20th President of the United States.
