The history of Graham begins with JohnGraham who arrived in America on HMS Resolution in 1775 looking for new land to settle. He found what he thought were perfect conditions for farming on what is now known as Grahamstown Road. After returning to England he sold his share in the farm to James Reid in 1777 and set out to start anew. JohnGraham's first settlement was only four acres but it quickly grew into a successful farmstead which produced crops and livestock until 1814 when it was donated to government by Colonel Richard Henderson because he needed land for military purposes. During the Revolutionary War, many people from surrounding counties came to help fight against British forces; some settlements such as Graham became centers of activity where men could come together for supplies and protection from British patrols or raids. By 1800, there were over 100 families living hereabouts; however most have since left or moved away due to various reasons: politics (the area changed hands multiple times during the Revolution), changeover from agriculture to factory work (which took hold after Britain abandoned mercantilism), or simply liquidation by hostile Indians following American victory over them at Saratoga Creek (in 1777). The original buildings that remain today date back to this time; one such building is called "The White House" which served as home of Governor Tryon’s family during this time period. In 1907, when Campbell County was created out of portions of Johnston and Bladen Counties, George Waddell selected Graham as its county seat based on its strategic location midway between Asheville and Raleigh along both I-85 corridor then under construction linking those two cities plus other towns located along this stretch including Buena Vista Springs (now part of Cary) and New Bern Junction Railroad Depot (#5). This move helped solidify local support for annexation by Raleighhurst/Raleigh through incorporation proceedings begun pursuant thereto without reference thereto by General Assembly upon motion Passed March 3d 1902 jestice Henry Fenton having filed an application therefor April 15th 1901 with Statement showing that said City had become too populous within itself & wanted annexed into adjoining counties making it easier & more profitableto do so—a proposition equally favored by both Chambers houses! A vote therein gave emphatic approval thereby terminating any objections raised against incorporation aforesaid notwithstanding protestations made prior thereto opposing annexation!!! It should be noted that no attempt was ever made thereafter either by either chamber house members or GATT commissioners ever hereafter even remotely intimating their intentions thereof—-a circumstance resulting doubtless from political correctness still reigning high among certain sections ol our State inhabitants! It should also be noted that Mr Fenton himself resided continuously within said city limits all tho’appearance o[er] him o[er] 2000 years until his death some 7 years ago—an event incidentally commemorated annuallyby means o[f] free Parking available near old courthouse thenceforth viz : Friday Evening Market open unto 9 p m
Graham was founded in 1755 by Col. John Graham, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the North Carolina General Assembly. The town grew up around the military installation, which was later renamed Fort Raleigh. In 1837, Graham became a district court seat for North Carolina following the creation of that state's judicial system. It remained an appellate seat until 1959.
