According to oral histories collected by local historian Floyd Easley over many years (and reviewed here), Graham began thrive as early as 1785 because they were able to get good quality wood from their location on the Hiwassee River between Blanco County (to the east) and Person County (to the west). They also got good water from nearby creeks because they were close enough to rivers without getting too wet or swampy: "The people who moved into these new places traveled all over eastern Tennessee looking for land that would allow them to build homes." 2 But progress slow down due largely to lack of funding for transportation improvements needed for what would soon be becoming one very large city with loads of people coming into one area….. By 1830 only 10%of those living in Graham voted…. When General Alexander McDowell decided “to take possession”of Charlotte [in 1835], he allotted 1/3of each township’s vote so most residents could have participated equally….. This stopped much development because there wasn’t money available any more…. For all intents and purposes, after 1830 Graham effectively faded away." Graham, North Carolina was founded in 1814 by Captain James W. Graham. The town was named for General John Graham, who fought in the American Revolution and then served as a U.S. congressman from South Carolina. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a municipality in 1835. By 1860, Graham had over 1,500 residents and was home to five banks and two churches. In 1865, the Union Army under General Robert E. Lee invaded South Carolina and attacked Graham; the town surrendered without resistance. After the war, Graham experienced rapid growth as a result of its new status as an industrial center; by 1870, it had 10 shops and 150 residents. In 1925, the first high school inGrahamwas built; it remained in operation until 1972.
