In 1886, the United States Patent Office granted US patent 4,034,512 to George Eastman for his perforated metal tube flashlight. Gastonia is a small town in the Pender County School District, located in the southeastern corner of North Carolina. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. Gastonia is known for its textile industry and for its cotton research and development program. The town has a rich history dating back to 1837 when Hargrave & Company began producing cloth in Gastonia. Today, Gastonia’s industries include textiles, transportation equipment, food processing, furniture manufacturing and homebuilding. In recent years, Gastonians have become involved in politics as well; several mayors have served since the town adopted a city form of government in 2002. The first Europeans to visit Gastonia were French traders who landed on the coast on October 16, 1735. Captain Pierre Le Moyne called it "Nova Scotia" but no one knows for certain where he got this idea from! It wasn't until 1739 that someone named Pierre de Louvain discovered what became known as "Gastonia." At first he thought it was an island because there was no harbor available on that side of the river! But after landing his ship on shore and exploring everything around him (including what may now be considered part of downtown Gastonia), he realized that there was nothing wrong with this place – it just didn't have any inhabitants! So Louvain decided to name his new settlement after himself: "Gastonia." The first settlers arrived in small groups over time because transporting goods by boat across the many miles ofriver was impossible withoutagers or boats large enough to hold all of them! As time went on more people began arriving by land from various parts of North Carolina so shipping restrictions were relaxed somewhat and boatloads started flowing into Gastonias maine constantly during those early days! During our early history we had some great pioneers such as C F Williamson and E W Pearce who planted rice seeds out their homes which helped feed us through these tough times! We also had a lot of firefighters who worked tirelessly every day fighting fires including ones started by lightning or hurricanes! In 1837 Hargrave & Company began making cloth here which made us one of the leading mills in America at that time!Today we continue to produce quality cloth products with our current mill which opened in 2007

However, some remnants of Gastonton's past still remain today with a strongly Democratic political culture that has continued to influence social life in the city even into recent times.
