It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gastonia was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1772 as a small fishing village on the Pee Dee River. The name Gastonia comes from St. Georges Parish (now Gaston), which was one of several settlements established along the river's banks during English settlement of what are now South Carolina and Georgia in the mid 18th century. The first post office in Gastonia was established on December 12, 1775, and became known as "Gastonia." The original church building still stands today and is used as an antique store and museum; it also served as a schoolhouse until 1955 when it burned down. In 1824, James White erected a sawmill on the Pee Dee River which became one of the most important mills in western North Carolina; it continued to operate until 1931. White also built many homes in Gastonia over time including some that remain standing today such as his home at 515 Washingtons Mill Road. During World War II, much activity took place around Gastonia with local companies producing munitions for the war effort including Allied Signal Manufacturing Company (ASM) and Hanes Corporation (HC). Many people who lived here have significant careers within those industries or within their respective communities that continue to this day - such as ASM's Don Knight and HC's Tommy Lee Jones among others. After World War II ended came economic decline for many parts of eastern North Carolina due to pollution resulting from industrial production following Global Warming phenomena throughout much of history - gastonia has managed to maintain its high quality of life despite this fact however other parts have not been so lucky
