It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The first settler in Gastonia was Levi Alexander Henderson on November 12, 1837. Henderson and his family built a log cabin on what is now known as State Route 16E just east of present day Gastonia. The first post office in Gastonia was established on October 27, 1838 by Wm Henson with the name "Henderson." On April 10, 1840, Jno Cockerill became the first postmaster when he opened an office at what is now Main Street and Patton Avenue. In 1847, Captain John Hildebrandt donated land for a public school which would eventually become Bastrop High School (now Bastrop Middle School). In 1865-1866 the town plat was drawn up and it included two blocks north of present day Patton Avenue and one block east of present day Main Street. On July 1st 1870 James Fenton took over as Postmaster after Wm Henson resigned due to ill health; Fenton's term ended December 31st 1870. The first telephone service in Gastonia began operations on February 26th 1871 from Harrison's store located at what is now US 421 Business Boulevard across from Mastix Drug Store.. On August 15th 1871 Charles Goodloe became postmaster after Wm Henson resigned due to ill health; Goodloe's term ended September 30th 1871 In 1880 Captain Amos Aiken donated land for a new courthouse which would later be called the First Baptist Church Building; construction began on this building in 1886 and it was completed in 1888. In 1902 Rev John Easley donated land for another courthouse which would be named Raleigh church building; construction began on this building in 1903 but it never reached completion because of financial problems . After World War I veteran Smedley Butler bought property east of Patton Avenue for $1 million dollars he started to build what would become known as Butler University which opened its doors to students in 1923 . After World War II local resident Willard Dixon donated land west of Patton Avenue for use as a housing development called Dixon Village which also opened its doors to students
