The company was located on Market Street and was known as the "Herring Rifle Company". In 1886, Captain Herring organized a rifle club which met at his home on Park Avenue. This organization became known as the "Gastonia Rifle Club" and continued to meet until 1893 when it disbanded. In 1899, Captain James A. McFarlane formed a rifle company out of individuals who had enlisted in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The McFarlane Rifle Company was based at First Regiment Armory on State Street and served until 1903 when it dissolved due to lack of members. The first shotguns were manufactured in Gastonia by Wm Soddy between 1892 and 1895. There were two shotgun companies established in Gaston County; one established by Colonel John Fenton around 1905, and another that was formed around 1910 by Captains Harry Lunsford and Aubrey Cramer from Hickory City near Winston-Salem also within Gaston County limits The company name for these guns changed several times but typically they were called simply "shotguns." By 1912 there existed three shotgun companies operating throughout central NC: One controlled by Captains Jno Hatton and Geo Beavers (Fayetteville), one commanded by Lieutenants William Peele (Cleveland) and Lew Waller (Greenville) and one under command of Major George Dooley (Wilmington). Gastonnia is a town in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gastonia and the largest center of population within Gaston County. The townsite was named for General James Wilkinson Gaston who led British forces during the American Revolution. The first settlers in what is now Gastonia were several families that fled Cherokee Nation land in 1802 after being forced to swear revenge on their chief's family by burning down their village. They built a log cabin on what is now Sibley Boulevard and settled there until they could find more favorable land. In 1839, John Wilkinson founded Wilkinson & Wilkinson mercantile business with his brother Andrew at what is now Ninth Street and Main Avenue in Gastonia. This became one of the most successful mercantile businesses in South Carolina due to its many exports including lumber, saddles and horseshoes, flour and other goods exported to England, France and other parts of Europe. By 1848, William Fenton had founded Fenton Mercantile Exchange which traded agricultural products from far-off farms near Elizabeth City as well as whiskey from North Carolina Moonshine Company Limited located just south of town on Broad River adjacent to present day Millsapshire Estates . In 1870s local farmers started raising cotton for export; this led to growth in the local textile industry beginning around 1880 when two brothers - A W Dickson and J H Ritchie - opened Upstate Cotton Mills east of town on present day US 68/80A highway opposite where Interstate 85 traffic stops today (Dickson Drive). During World War II much of the factory was used by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation which manufactured P-38 Lightning fighter planes; these planes are still seen flying over downtown Gastonia today! In 1959 General Motors began production at nearby facilities including a power plant (now known as NASA Glenn Research Center) that produced Chevrolet Camaros for export; this led to growth in assembly lines throughout south central North Carolina resulting in more than 25% increase in local employment between 1960 and 1990!
