Gastonia is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Gastonia is the county seat for Gaston County and home to the Gastonia City Hall. The first settlers in what is now Gastonia were farmers who arrived from Maryland in 1814. They founded a small community called Cedar Grove on Cedar Creek which became the nucleus of what would become Gastonia. In 1835, General John Biddle sold land near present-day Gastonia to Levi Coffin for $1,000. At that time, most of what is now Gaston County was part of Person County. However, due to an act of the General Assembly known as "The Taxation Act", all land within this new county was assessed at £10 per acre (2¢ per square foot). This provided an impetus for heavy industry in what would soon be called "Gastonia". In 1865, when it became apparent that cotton could not indefinitely support large manufacturing operations in this newly developed county; businessman Isaac Newton purchased 1/3 of all slaves held by Confederate soldiers living within Person County and brought them into Gastton County under his ownership and management That same year saw construction begin on one of North Carolina's first brickyards – James Hargrave's brickyard – which remain today one of the largest employers in town with over 100 employees. In 1868, Loyalist Captain David Farrill came down South with his family to escape military service during The Civil War and settled here permanently with his family Farrill laid out a grid pattern around present-day downtown which remains much as it did when he laid out its boundaries over 150 years ago In 1886, Pershing Elementary School opened its doors as one of only two public schools open in Gaston County It wasn't until 1925 that gastonian civic leaders organized their efforts to create their own government separate from Person County government This led eventually to establishment of the current form of government we know today as 'the city'. On July 14th 1928 Mayor Loring Sizer unveiled plans for a new courthouse complex located on Main Street between Durham Avenue & Johnston Street which would later become home to both the Justice Courts and Municipal Courtrooms today In 1951 gasoline stations began opening up throughout town along Johnston Street providing convenience for motorists travelling through town center . By 1961 there were more than 20 gas stations scattered throughout town . Today many businesses still operate out-of-town locations making Bastonne very diverse compared to other rural counties
