On July 8, 1875, Gaston County became one unit with Guilford County when that county was created from parts of Davidson and Mecklenburg counties following a referendum vote ratified by both houses of the General Assembly on August 3, 1875 Today’s Gaston Parish includes portions of what were once separateauga (west) Cherokee Nation villages including Tuskegee Airmen Airbase which closed as part of DoD contractor reductions effective March 1st 2007; Hickory Plantation which closed as a result; Hightower Plantation which closed as a result; Stonecrest Plantation also included within Cherokee Nation Village boundaries; while Wellesley Plantation still remains unincorporated within Cherokee Nation Village boundaries..
