Gastonia is a town in Gastonia County, North Carolina. The population was 2,764 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Gaston-Lenoir Community College and Gastonia Regional Airport. The town takes its name from General James Wilkinson who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg and General William T. Sherman during the American Civil War. The first people to live in Gastonia were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near what is now downtown Gastonia. In 1839, Andrew Lenoir founded Lenoir & Company, a cotton business in what is now Gastonia. In 1845, James Wilkinson purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown Gastonia from Andrew Lenoir for $1,000 cash. He named his new community after General James Wilkinson who had helped lead the Union army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1861, due to fears of slave unrest in neighboring counties following the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1st), Governor John Ashe ordered all militia units within North Carolina to muster outside of Raleigh for three days starting on January 8th. This included all of western Gaston County as well as parts of Johnston and Moore Counties east of I-95 which made up eastern East Tennessee Territory at that time. On January 9th, 1861, Confederate forces under General Alexander McClellan attacked Union troops at Pittston Landing near modern day Hickory Hill on Roanoke Island off of Wilmington Harbor . The victory allowed McClellan to return home safe before any hostilities could break out between Confederate States of America and United States Of America On December 20th 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the Morrill Act which created Northeastern South Carolina as part ofthe Union states along with Maine and New Hampshire Gastonia's first post office opened on July 10th 1870 under postal schedule No 710/70 The first settler in this area was Abram Hultgren who arrived with his family on a wagon train from Illinois on October 3rd 1870 A two story stone building still stands today on Main Street that served as an early grocery store until it was replaced by a more recent structure in 1984

The Census Bureau estimated its population to be 26,824 in 2018. The area that would become Gastonia was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1787. In 1819, James Gist founded Gaston Mills Company which became one of the leading textile companies in America. One of its products was a shirt made from white cottonseed that became known as "Gaston's Shirt." In 1849, Pemberton & Hawley built a sawmill on what is now Broad Street in downtown Gastonia. The milling industry declined after 1850 but continued to produce lumber until it closed in 1918. The first post office was established at Gastonia on November 15, 1851, with Wm. Tillery as mail carrier and Cushman as postmaster. A store opened on Main Street nearpresent-day First Baptist Church before being moved to Seventh Avenue north of town about 1860 or 1870 for storage reasons when new brick buildings were erected on this site (now East Boulevard). The first school was established in 1865 with three students taught by Mrs Oliphant from her home on High Street NW (now First Baptist Church Road). A kindergarten followed soon afterwards and classes were held outdoors until 1886 when an addition was built for classroom use adjacent to present day Middle School Drive SW across from First Baptist Church where learning opportunities continue today within K-12 public schools operated by the City Schools system since 1969 as part of education services provided through Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Public Schools
In 1792, Gastonia was founded by General James Edward Harnett. The town sprang up due to the discovery of gold in the area. Gastonia became a bustling center for trade and commerce. It prospered until 1847, when the Slave Trade Act was passed by Congress. This law prohibited slavery in the United States from any new or existing territory. As a result, many African Americans were forced to move to other parts of the country. In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most of North Carolina seceded from the Union and became part ofthe Confederacy. Gastonia remained within the Union though it experienced some economic turmoil during this time period. The town eventually regained its former prosperity thanks to industry and tourism beginning in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
