Gastonia, North Carolina is a city in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 482 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gaston County. The anchor tenant in Gastonia's downtown area is Tyson Foods, Inc., which employs over 5,000 people and has been located there since 1912. In addition to Tyson Foods, other major employers include American Express Company (founded in 1911), FedEx Ground Corporation (founded in 1970), and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Airport Authority. The region that includes Gastonia was settled by English colonists in the 17th century. By 1810, about 60% of the town's citizens were slaves who worked on plantations along the Pee Dee River south of Gastonville. The town grew rapidly from its founding until after Reconstruction when it lost much of its slave-based economic base to cotton farming elsewhere in South Carolina and Georgia. In 1870, a group of businessmen founded what became known as "The Triangle" business district surrounding what are now downtown Gastonia and Uptown Gastonia areas - this later included parts of uptown Mecklenburg County as well. That same year saw the opening of first local banks: First National Bank and Trust Company (now part of Wells Fargo) on Broad Street; Citizens National Bank on Centre Street; Union National Bank across from present day Centerville Mall; as well as Merchants National Bank (later JBS) across from Central High School before being replaced by First Tennessee Banks later that decade. In 1898-99 a new jail was built on Commerce Street just east of present day State College Boulevard - it remains one of Gaston County's few remaining original buildings from antebellum times despite having been moved several times during courthouse construction period over various locations including two stints at what is now US Highway 26 between downtown Gastonia/Uptown and Mecklenburg County Line Road Oval Park before finally settling at its current location near Interstate 85/I-595 exit 6 around 2000yds northeast thereof following an extensive renovation project funded by private donations with support from both local government entities as well as property owner groups through grants & loans administered by HeritageBankUSA – currently home to multiple restaurants & retail businesses including Gallery Place Diner & Reasonable priced gift shops etc… In 1915 work began on erection of present day City Hall building which still stands today with office space available adjacent via dedicated elevator garage accessed via one door off main lobby level – all while also accommodating art galleries (& other professional functions such as weddings etc…) Edmund Ruffin Jr., Sr.'s storerooms remain extant within historic Neal–Fenton House complex located adjacent to modern day City Hall site even though most likely razed for housing purposes following Restoration Act legislation passed by legislature prior to facility’s dedication – see photos below for more detail… By 1930 only about 50% or so enslaved African Americans were still living within sight or reachof white citizens according to author interview with then Mayor Wades Whitehurst conducted circa 1990 – sadly something not uncommon during those years given high levels Opioid overdoses amongst black community members throughout country resultant primarily due to poverty & lack Of access To necessary medications…. post-integration many African Americans migrated away form rural areas out into larger urban areas throughout southeastern United States creating problems similar too numerous small towns WW2 thru1970 no problem but large cities caused BYNRA [the New Deal] much Admired Name For Countrywide Good Intentions But Many Failed miserably After World War II efforts continued unto late 1950’s thru early 1960’s under Mayor John Easley led councilman Spencer Clawson[1] Comprehensive plans were developed conceptually BUT execution Struggled due largely To political parties Differences Over loyalties Among Councilmen & staffrather Then achievements Took precedent Over vision

Gastonia, North Carolina is a city in Gastonia County, North Carolina. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in the state of North Carolina and the 11th-largest municipality in the United States. Gastonia was founded by Scots Presbyterians in 1788 as a trading post on what is now known as Pisgah Creek. The town name derives from "Gaston," meaning "a fisherman." Gaston County was formed from portions of Bertie and Person Counties on March 15, 1853. The first site for Gastonia was a small clearing near present day State Route 1 and Pisgah Creek. The opening of the Cumberland Gap Railroad made it possible for settlers to travel to new markets far beyond their original geographical reach. In 1881, Gaston County became one of seven counties which joined Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). As part of TVA's efforts to improve communications within its region, money was appropriated to build a network of water mains that would allow easier irrigation throughout much of southern Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. This system came to be known as "Thesystem". In 1918, TVA merged with other regional agencies such as Southern Bell Telephone Company (SBTC) to become National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). At its height in 1928, NBC employed more people than any other American company. In 1955, Gaston County established itself as an election precinct within NCSU's Charlotte Campus boundaries; however voting continued at nearby State College until that year when all students were required to vote at NCSU campuses across the state under then- federal law requiring all students who attend public universities or colleges in North Carolina to do so. Elections continued until 1971 when they were moved out of campus altogether pursuant to then-state policy that all elections must take place off campus where students are free not only to participate but alsoto audit courses and make decisions about student government membership/activity! After being off campus for nearly thirty years - until reestablished on May 8th 2009 - elections will once again take place at NCSU's Charlotte Campus through 2019... thanks again à la Carte Voting!
