Gastonia, North Carolina is an historic city in Gaston County, North Carolina. It is the county seat of Gastonia and a major center for education, government, and business. The population was 34,834 at the 2010 census. The Gastonia- Moore County Chamber of Commerce has been located here since 1894. The first known inhabitant of what is now Gastonia was a man by the name of Harnett named after Henry Laurens Harnett who settled there in 1780. In 1814, John Cranch moved from Savannah to Gaston County with his family and founded a permanent settlement called Clinch Valley on land he had purchased from the Chickasaw Nation. He also built some initial structures in what is now Gastonia including a mill which still stands today and remains one of the largest cotton mills in the Carolinas. In 1828 William Ladd bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land near present-day downtown Gastonia from John Couch for $2,000. This mall extended downriver to current day US Highway 321 where it connected with French Broad River at what is now known as Pryor Road/Hwy 158/Route 9 intersection. In 1830 he donated this tract to the Baptist Convention for use as their meeting place for Central Virginia conferences which were then held there every other year during summer months only because done at different places like Elizabeth City (now Raleigh). Ladd's heirs sold most or all of his property eastward along French Broad River to Jno Easley in 1840 who built an earthwork fortification known as Clinton Barracks that served as both jail and military stronghold during Reconstruction days when African Americans were restricted from owning white property or practicing any kind of independent thought or expression without prior consent from white landowners - an event that came to be known as "Easley's War." When much later General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered all black troops out of Georgia & Alabama he ordered them also out of Charlotte Hornets basketball team owner James Worthy's house on Roanoke Island because segregationists felt black people would not stay single long enough to take over such prominent economic assets as that house (& plantation). On February 2nd 1865 Confederate Major General Alexander McCallum surrendered Fort Hindman at Greensboro after two weeks' siege following several days' fight against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant; however early news reports estimated that about 20% – 30% – even more Confederate soldiers surrendered unconditionally throughout southwestern Virginia & southern Tennessee instead{end note}. Consequently many former slaves brought over into Union lines within�North Carolina�(eastern Forrest County),�including General Robert E Lee’s Headquarters Department Headquarters Aiken District campground just outside Greensboro while others simply walked away�like so many other rural poor whites across America during those trying times[1]. By 1865 most Confederate soldiers had either returned home East or become refugees living among free blacks until they finally got their freedom around 1920 when Reconstruction ended officially in America through passage of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964[2]. The town was originally called "Catoosa." In 1865, it changed its name to "Gastonia" after General James H. Garrick who fought with General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican-American War. In 1898, Gaston County became part of North Carolina and renamed itself "Gastonia County." The town has two churches: First Baptist Church which was built in 1915 and replaced an earlier building that was destroyed by fire; and Saint John's Episcopal Church which was built in 1924 and remains the only Episcopal church remaining in Gaston County today.
