As more farming operations took place around Gaston County over time, industry also increased significantly beginning with a brewery founded by John Dutton here in 1888. This Brewery quickly became one ofaleigh's most prominent businesses during this time frame; indeed several notable landmarks still bear their original namesakes today including Dutton Park (named for him), Morgan Hill subdivision (named for General Daniel Morgan) and Lake Norman Boulevard (named for Confederate General Pecan Brakeman). In recent years there has been an increase in development along Interstate 85 throughout town which has led to traffic congestion on many streets within downtown while also impacting adjacent neighborhoods such as Mount Airy which are seeing an uptick in development due to highway access opportunities nearby. Despite these issues though gentrification continues to occur within areas such as Mount Airy with some families moving into newly built homes while others continue to livein older properties which have seen limited or no redevelopment over time

The first permanent European settlers in what would become Gastonia were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1765. The first post office was established in 1772, and by 1819 it had grown to include both Gaston County and Union County. In 1839, James Hance founded Hance’s Mill on Johnston River near present day Union University Boulevard. At that time there were only two mills in North Carolina; Hance’s Mill was by far the largest and most successful. By 1860, there were over 60 mills operating in North Carolina alone; many of these mills became subsidiary businesses of larger companies such as Pemberton & Company (later renamed Pemberton Industries), Brown Brothers Harvester (later Brown-Forman Corporation), John Denton Manufacturing Company (now Wacoal Inc.), an early electric company, Joplin Glass Works (now Joplin Glass Center), Dow Chemical Company (now DOW Chemicals) and others during the late 19th century throughout America's Great Lakes region. In 1865 Gastonia became one of three cities within Confederate States of America following secession from the United States; however within a few years after this change much of what made Gaston unique as a town had also disappeared with no return to its pre-war era economy or social fabric other than brief periods when residents returned for holidays or business reasons only to find their homes gone again when they left for good It wasn't until Reconstruction Era efforts began after World War II that any semblance of economic stability returned to town while other aspects slowly regained some level of function including reestablishment of schools/institutions/jobs which has continued into present day . gastoniaNC History
Gastononia was founded in 1795 by Captain John Gaston as a small town on the Yadkin River. The town grew and prospered until 1820, when it was destroyed by a flood. In 1824, Gastonia became the first town in North Carolina to have a railroad station. The town's fortunes declined after the railroad came to an end, but resumed growth following the construction of the James Fayette Bridge in 1875. The bridge connected Gastonia with Raleigh and greatly increased its importance as a commercial center. In 1903, Gastonia became the capital of North Carolina.
