Gaston County has one of the most diverse and historic gun magazines in the United States. The Gastonia Rifle and Pistol Club, founded in 1892, was one of the first clubs to have a magazine subscription service. Other early members include George Washington Carver and Dr. Samuel Moulton Pritchard. The club became known for its traditional rifle and pistol matches, as well as its annual NRA convention. The Gaston Rifle and Pistol Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6pm in the Gaston County Fairgrounds, located just outside of Gastonia. Members can come from all over North Carolina to compete in these matches, which are held under the auspices of NRA Western North Carolina Chapter #1. Today, Gastonia Rifle & Pistol Club operates out of three different locations: one inside the county courthouse (since 1915), one at Appalachian Firearms Supply next door (opened in 1949), and finally their current location adjacent to First Baptist Church on Garner Road near Hwy 56/I-95 (opened in 1970). In addition to its traditional rifle & pistol matches, GRC also sponsors muzzleloading competitions ( shotgunning events) annually at nearby Boyd’s Gunsmithing Center; Trap shooting every other Saturday during Lent; Kids Guns Adventures; an Annual BBQ Cookout on Fourth of July weekend; an All-star Game Day Tournament every November ; various holiday Shootouts throughout year including Easter Sunday Egg hunt season opener day (!); 4thofjuly “Cotton Belt” Shotgun Shooting Competition open to anyone over 21 years old who is registered with local law enforcement agencies across NC (& surrounding states!) that agree to participate (& receive trophies!); Monthly Meeting where member dues are voted upon by club members plus auction items proceeds – typically featuring 5-10 firearms from various manufacturers + accessories + ammunition

In 1985, Gaston County NRA assumed sponsorship of the NCGC from Raleigh NRA.
