Gastonia is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Gaston County and the only one without a incorporated village. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1836 as a stop on their way to Charlotte. The first settler in Gastonia was John McKnight. He built his house on what is now Court Street in 1837. The first store opened in 1840 and the first post office was established in 1841. In 1846, Gastonia had two schools: one for white children and one for colored children. A black school was built in 1865 but it closed due to lack of funding. In 1870, John Hays bought land adjoining present-day Gastonia from Jordon Johnson for $1,000 dollars (equivalent to $ ). He began selling lots to settlers and opening up the farmlands for cultivation. By 1880, he had developed over 4 acres (2 hectares). Hays named his ranch "Gastonia" after his birthplace of Scotland – also known as Glasgow – which he had visited while touring America with his family that year. In 1902, Gastonia became an incorporated village when all of its citizens voted to do so by referendum (the only village within Gaston County at that time). At that time there were just 10 residents living within the limits of present-day Gastonia proper while 1/3 of all residents lived outside its borders on either side of I-85W between Winston-Salem and Raleigh; these people constituted what are now known as the rural Unincorporated Areas or Outer Banks communities located east of Interstate 85 along US Highway 401 between Weldon Beach and Wilmington Beach; they collectively made up about 60% of the population then as compared to 90% today because much of their economic activity took place further inland among larger cities such as Chapel Hill or Carrboro which are adjacent municipalities with larger populations not subject to incorporation by smaller villages like Gastonia
Gastonia was founded in 1785 by Colonel James Robertson and his wife, Peggy. Gastonia became a chartered town on February 17, 1831. The town's first mayor was Wm. Hargrave. Gastonia had a population of 571 in 1860 and 1,043 in 1880. In 1915, Gastonia's first African American Mayor was Cephus Haley.
