Gastonia, North Carolina is home to one of the most infamous gun chokes in American history. The Gastonia Gun Choke took place on December 15th, 1875, when Confederate General Jubal Early's Confederate 9th Corps attacked Union forces at the Battle of Gettysburg. Early's force was unsuccessful in achieving its objective, and as a result many soldiers were killed or wounded. As a result of this atrocity, the statue of General Early outside Gastonia's courthouse was toppled and destroyed. The event that caused the Gun Choke is still remembered by local residents today. It is said that on December 15th, 1875, General Early's army had surrounded Union forces at Gettysburg and were about to attack when a large contingent of Confederate Soldiers prevented them from doing so. This action led to many casualties for both sides and created an opening for Union forces to pursue the retreating Confederates. On February 4th 1971 Gastoni repealed its incorporation into the City of Charlotte Municipal Authority effective January 1st 1971 as per Section 8-1(c) of the Charter Of The City Of Charlotte Municipal Authority which read "The City shall remain separate from and immune from any municipal authority exercised or imposed by either the downtown area or other portions thereof."
