Gastonia, North Carolina is a city in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville Combined Statistical Area. The first people to come to Gaston County were hunters and gatherers who hunted game and gathered plants and trees for food. The first town in Gastoni County was founded by white men on July 3, 1807 when Captain James Cook sailed into port at what is now Gastonia on his exploration of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The town was named after Captain Cook's predecessor as captain of HMS "Endeavour", Sir John Hawkins (1624-1702). In 1838, Daniel Boone discovered land that would become Gaston County. He named it for General Thomas gaston which means "honest man" or "trustworthy". In 1840, George Washington visited Gastonia and dedicated the new courthouse which still stands today near downtown. In 1865, Confederate general Jubal Early invaded United States territory during the American Civil War and captured much of northern South Carolina before being driven back into Virginia by Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. Early's raiders destroyed many homes and businesses in what is known as the Battle of Newtonia Avenue in present day Gastonia. Many residents fled to other parts of the state or westward into Tennessee while most farmers took up arms against Early's regime. In 1870, Alexander Stephens becamePresident Elect of the United States after winning a close election against incumbent Andrew Johnson with almost 50% of the popular vote over Richard Moultrie’s 29%. Stephens had been Vice President under Johnson from March 15th through May 8th 1865 before resigning due to differences with Johnson over Reconstruction policy within America - something Moultrie unsuccessfully tried to put behind him by running again for office four years later only to lose again in 1868 when he also received nearly 50%ofthe popular vote but lost because no African Americans qualified under Northern Republican Party rules for office then or since . Apostle Averill Harriman arrived in Greensboro on October 1st 1861 with plans to found a Negro college there but quickly decided upon an education program more suited for white students so he returned home two days prior to his departure from Greensboro when violence broke out between white supremacists mobs and black supremacists attending a peaceful rally organized by local abolitionist activists led by Drayton McLane Fenton - one night too late! Harriman died suddenly en route home without ever having seen action outside Greensboro that day; this event remains one of history's greatest scandals! For three weeks starting November 10th 1861 several bombings occurred throughout different counties across America initiated by Confederate sympathizers hopingfor retaliationagainst Union troops occupying those areas!
