Gastonnia is a city in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gaston County. The city is located on the eastern edge of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The first known permanent settler in Gastonia was Captain John Smith in 1768. He and his wife were among the original citizens of what would become Gastonia when it was named for General James Hamilton Moore, who had fought against British forces during the American Revolution. In 1849, Gastonia became a town after being granted a charter from South Carolina Junction Company No. 3 under which it became "an incorporated village." Gastonnia experienced growth following World War II as businesses such as Ford Motor Company established themselves there and demand for housing increased with post-war suburban developments nearby. However, economic stagnation and several natural disasters have characterized Gastonnia's recent history: an EF2 tornado struck the community on October 15th, 2005; a severe thunderstorm outbreak killed two people and injured twenty-three others on February 14th, 2008; flash flooding caused by Hurricane Floyd destroyed over 100 homes and businesses in late September 2009; and major flooding occurred during Hurricane Gustav in November 2009 that left over one hundred families homeless. In 2013-14, efforts began to revitalize downtown Gastonnia with passage of legislation by both chambers of Congress authorizing up to $50 million towards infrastructure improvements including new roads and bridges as well as stormwater management systems across all five counties within Gastonnia's boundaries - an initiative spearheaded by Mayor Donnie Fletcher that has seen significant progress since its inception.

In 1926, Gastonica congressman John Rankin introduced legislation that would make racial segregation unconstitutional in North Carolina. rankin's bill passed both houses of Congress but was vetoed by Governor William Tillman. The city experienced another period of economic success during World War II; however, due to its proximity to Germany and the Axis powers, Gastonians were among the first Americans to be affected by Nazi propaganda. Since then, gastonians have generally been supportive of progressive causes such as political correctness and multiculturalism
Gastonia was founded in 1792 by Captain John Gaston. The first African American to own land in the area, Gaston helped found what is now known as the city of Charlotte. From there, he started a cotton plantation and prospered until his death in 1838. His grandson, James Buchanan Gaston, became one of North Carolina's most powerful men and served as governor from 1851 to 1857 and 1861 to 1865. After the Civil War, Gastonia experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location on the main route between Raleigh and Charleston. In 1870, Gastonia became the state capital of North Carolina when it replaced Raleigh as the primary seat of government for eastern North Carolina. The city continued to grow rapidly through the 20th century with major development around its shopping districts, hospitals, and public schools.
