Gastonia, North Carolina is a city in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 492 at the 2010 census. Gastonia is the county seat of Gaston County. It is part of the Charlotte–Fort Mill, NC-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1860, it was known as "Plymouth" because of its similarity to Plymouth Rock located in Massachusetts. The first residents of Gastonia were white planters who bought land from the Cherokee Indians in 1796 and began to cultivate tobacco and rice. They built a plantation on what is now Spring Lake Boulevard near present day Gastonia Elementary School before moving to Great Mills in 1812. In 1838, John Coker founded Coker's Ferry Commission which transported goods between Charlotte and Wilmington and became one of the largest transportation companies in America with routes across both states. He also developed cotton plantations around Summerville, Spruce Hill and other locations in Gaston County. Cotton production ended by 1920 but much remains preserved from that time including large slave quarters at White Hall Plantation along Spring Lake Boulevard which are now property of the state Department of Transportation; creekside homes dating back to when navigation was difficult on freshwater lakes; agricultural outbuildings such as windmills, granaries and chicken houses; instrument shops (now part of Appalachian State University); a dairymaid’s cottage; a smallpox hospital built by Drury Lane Perkins; an apothecary shop (now part of Appalachian State University); commercial buildings such as stores and restaurants (the original Post Office building still stands); churches (Stated Presbyterian Church still stands), several schools including Armstrong High School where African Americans were integrated beginning in 1955; two airports - one serving Charlotte-Fort Mill Airport served until 1966 when Raleigh–Durham International Airport opened nearby The current name for Gastonia came about after General Andrew Johnson ordered all slaves brought back into Union lines under martial law during his April 12 visit to Raleigh while he was seeking support against secessionist forces within the Confederacy. Local citizens raised money for food for free black troops stationed throughout Northeastern Virginia so that they could be fed while awaiting their freedom which occurred on April 26th 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House pidgin English being used then among slaveholders hereabouts: "Gastonia" meant "food supply". Johnson declared that everyone within three miles should come forward with any food they may have stored or possess so that it might be distributed amongst those affected by emancipation including 1/5thousand men woman children & elderly citizens who had been held prisoner since March 1865 plus any freedmen living on farms north & south Claiborne Avenue extending east from downtown Winston-Salem pronounced GASTOONIA meaning FREE AGENTS OF THE NORTH CAROLINA REPUBLIC
