Before the arrival of the Europeans, Gastonia was a small town in North Carolina. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Gastonia were Dutch traders and settlers who arrived in 1629. The Dutch traded with the Indians and developed trade relationships that allowed them to become rich. In 1638, the English explored and discovered the area that includes Gastonia. They began trading with natives here and soon began developing commerce with England as well. The English took over many of the Native American behaviors here such as hunting and fishing which lead to a decrease in local resources. This meant that English traders were able to build up their economy here by trading goods they didn’t have access to back home. The British also started expanding their territory northward in America during this time period so they began looking for new land to trade on. They found some areas that were rich in natural resources but also had people living there so they decided to settle these areas instead of just selling products back home. This led to the growth of Gaston County which was named after Sir William Johnson, an Englishman who colonized this part of America during this time period. He founded a military fort at what is now called Johnson Station in 1728-29 which became one of the most important points for British settlement along both coasts due to its location and its connection with other forts across North Carolina
