In 1865, Gastonia became home to one of America's first cotton plantations when John Pemberton purchased land east of town from Isaac Redmon Jones Sr. In 1880, Gastonians voted to secede from North Carolina and join the Union as a state within the new nation of America. As part of this effort, they erected two lengthy stone walls around their community which remain today as municipal markers: "Erected By: The People Of Gastonania November 5th 1880" and "Erected By: The people Of Gastonania October 25th 1906". After becoming an independent state, Gastoniana played a significant role in developing its economy with various manufacturing endeavors including papermaking and shoe manufacture; however it also experienced some difficult times during Reconstruction with high rates of crime and poverty. However following World War II, gastonian culture began to recover with initiatives such as art appreciation programs and music festivals being held annually until the early 21st century Today, gastonian businesses continue to thrive with continued innovation in technology among others; however there are some challenges that have faced the community throughout its history including gentrification which has resulted in displacement of longtime residents while promoting large-scale tourism results in increased traffic congestion on local roadsides late into the night
Gastonia was founded by the Cherokee in 1775. The town was named for General Gaston, who fought in the American Revolution. Gastonia became a slaveholding community and many of its citizens were enslaved until the Civil War.
