This event ignited the American Civil War and led to America's first international conflict. Garner played a significant role in this war by providing food and goods to Confederate forces throughout the region. After the war ended, Garner continued to grow as a manufacturing center for cotton goods and other products until it was destroyed by fire in 1930s. Today, Garner is home to a small community known as Old Town which preserves much of its historical significance from before 1900
