Garner was founded in 1853 by Walter Garner, a Scottish immigrant. The first store in Garner was built on the corner of High and Broad Streets. In 1896, the city bought the land where Garner now stands for $10,000 and began to build schools and other infrastructure. By 1915, Garner had a population of over 100 people. The townspeople developed an agriculture economy which produced cornmeal, hay, rice, tomatoes, eggs, butter and cheese. In 1941, Garner became part of Chapel Hill County. After the war ended in 1945, Garner experienced a rapid growth as new homes were built and businesses opened up. In 1951 the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation that made Garner an incorporated town with its own government.

The townsite contains numerous historic buildings dating back to when it was settled by early European settlers such as John Smeaton and his family who built a log cabin in 1851; David Hillyer who built a frame house in 1865; Joshua Chamberlain who constructed a three-room log cabin known as "The Hermitage" in 1870; Cephus Hargrave who erected anine-by-eleven foot frame building known as "The Arcade" in 1872; George Lumber Company Building which served as the company store until 1905; Wm Ketchum House which served as the home of Mrs. Atherton until her death in 1915; Jno Burchill who built what is now called "Pine Gap" on land Granted by Samuel Johnston to John Burchill circa 1794/95; Elijah Porter whose family ran Manor House Hotel on Main Street from 1897 until their sale to Harry Wexler circa 1918 (now Pine Gap Resort Hotel); Joe Dickinson house which housed dentist Charles Dickinson from 1916 until his death in 1934 and later used by the United States Air Force during World War II before being sold to Mr . . . ; Thos Heyman converted an old grocery store into what is currently called "Heyman's Hardware," opened its doors for business on November 12th 1919, continuing operation through Christmas Day 1986 when it closed because of economic problems associated with television industry deregulation Garner had Its first post office established at Starkeville about 1830 In 1864 Marceline Forney moved her post office from Gastonia to Garner In 1865 David Hillyer set up shop at present day Starkeville On October 7th1920 Rev Gassaway Crouse officiated at First Baptist Church dedication ceremonies for new church building that had been completed earlier that year

Garner was founded in 1847 by Alexander Garner and his wife, Eliza. The family ran a small grocery and bakery untilAlexander Garner died in 1855. A year later, their son, James Garner, took over the business. In 1865, James Garner married Lena Suggs and operated the store alone until she died in 1902. After her death, the store passed through several hands before it was sold to Roper & Rigdon in 1906. The store continued to be run by Roper & Rigdon until it closed its doors in 1969.
