Despite thesepositive developments however, Hurricane Floyd made landfallin 1988 causing extensive damageto both physical infrastructureandthelocal economy whichresultedinadeclineineconomicactivityover ensuing years. Garner was founded in 1784 by John Garner and his wife, Susannah. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Pee Dee River and its natural resources. By 1802, Garner had a population of twenty-eight people. In 1824, Garner became the county seat of Wilson County. In 1836, the name was changed to Garner after General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
