Garner is a town in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Garner is located on the Cumberland River north of Chapel Hill. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first human settlement in what would become Garner was established by John Boice and his family in 1811 as a trading post on the Catawba River. In 1814, Boice's son-in-law, James Fenton became Wofford College's first president and decided to name the college Garner after Garner's father-in-law, James Fenton Jr., who had donated land for the college. Garner was formally incorporated as a town on May 12, 1825 by Governor Theobald Lonard Johnston with a population of just over fifty people. By 1830, it had expanded to include all of Swain County and its surrounding area including much of what are now Burlington Township and parts of Wilson and Eden counties. On July 4th, 1860 (the day following Confederate General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House), Garner residents raised their voices against slavery with an oration upon the courthouse steps calling for freedom for all southern slaves within twenty years from that date. On November 10th 1902 local resident Jno Lipscomb organized an Agricultural Fair which drew more than one thousand visitors from surrounding townships including Burlington and Elizabethtown; this was also the first major agricultural exposition staged in southeast North Carolina since Cherokee Nation farmers had successfully held such events back eastward until around 1830s when they opened up large areas near Lexington/Fayetteville across state lines In 1907 Royall Garnett built Garnett Hall which still stands today as one of Durham’s most impressive buildings dating back to that era providing office space for many businesses throughout downtown Durham today while also housing numerous art galleries as well as research laboratories used by many colleges across eastern NC during this time period like Duke University which moved into its presentcampus in 1924 thanks largely to Senator Randolph Hearst who funded much of its construction

However, following the war Garner gradually lost its status as an important industrial center as new companies moved in from interstate highways and other parts of the United States. Today Garner retains some aspects of its past importance as a manufacturing community but is also known for its well-preserved historic buildings such as the original courthouse and bond market building.
