Garner is a small town in western North Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1839 by Patrick Garner and his family. The present-day town of Garner was platted in 1868 by James Fayette Garland. In 1860, it was the location where Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House. The first gun shop in Garner opened on Main Street in 1892. The shop's proprietor, John Witherspoon, developed the system now known as firearms identification that allowed customers to purchase firearms without having to go through a complete background check or wait for weeks or months for their product to arrive from the manufacturer. In 1924, several members of the American Legion purchased a grinder and an oil bath tool from J & H Smith Arms and Paper Importers of Garner for use at their campground near downtown. This facility became known as "Campbell's Armory." The National Firearms Act (NFA) was passed on November 28, 1934, which created the National Firearms Museum and Register located within the Department of Justice in Washington D.C., which holds records on all aspects of firearm ownership and trade including but not limited to sales and transfers between private individuals and governments. On May 14, 1959, Camp Campbell Armory closed its doors after over fifty years of operation serving local law enforcement officers as well as civilians who enjoyed shooting there during open season while also hosting various community events such as ball games and softball tournaments among other things On October 2nd 2009 Camp Campbell Armory reopened with new management after being vacant for many years
