Garner was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers and their families. The town became a small farming community until the early 1900s, when it began to grow into an important coal mining town. Gun lights were first used in Garner during World War I to attract Allied bombers over the town to explode without harming civilians. The gunsights were also used as searchlights during World War II. In 1951, Garner became the center of a gun control movement when its city council passed a resolution calling for stricter regulation of firearms within the city limits. In 1776, General John Sullivan and his forces arrived in what is now Garner and destroyed much of the village as they fought their way northward. The first mention of Garner in writing was from James Robertson on July 12, 1779 when he noted that “the place where I landed at this instant is called Garrard’s Ford”. The townspeople were able to build a courthouse in 1824 but it burned down in 1825. A new courthouse was built and opened in 1827 but it also burned down. A third courthouse was built between 1830 and 1835 but it also burned down. In 1850, Alexander Henderson donated land for a school which became known as Garner Middle School. The school continued until 1959 when it merged with Concord High School to form concord-garner Schools Incorporated (CGSI). In 1976, CGSI became an independent school district with its own board of education and name change to concord-garner Schools Incorporated (CGSI) again effective January 1st 1978 The first post office opened in 1865 and operated until 1901 A railroad line arrived through Garner in 1870 which lead to increased development including homes being erected along Railroad Avenue In 1903, one hundred years after its founding, Garner had a population of 901 people . It peaked at 1,822 residents during World War II due to military activity within the community . However , following World War II , the population slowly declined over the next several decades due to various reasons such as retirementism ; however , by 2000 , Garner had returned back up to its prewar levels with 705 residents
