They also acquired land east of present-day Garner to build up their holdings which eventually became over . The first post office in present-day Garner opened on October 3, 1800. In 1809/10 Captains John and Mary's youngest son James Fayette Garner III started to clear land north of present day Highway 26 between what are now Lockhart Drive and Pemberton Road for farming purposes. He later sold this land to his father-in-law Rev Samuel Hammond for $4 per acre plus interest payments until it reached its current size of . There were no stores or mills in those days so farm hands brought goods down Highway 26 to marketplaces in Raleigh or Durham daily during the winter months when there were no roads available other than dirt lanes leading into these townships. In 1827/28 Ebenezer Wigglesworth built a small log cabin known as "The Gables" on property located today's Park Street just south of Highway 276 across from modern day Carrboro High School).
