Fuquay Varina is a small town located in southeastern North Carolina. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fuquay Varina is home to Hargrave University, one of the oldest and largest universities in the Carolinas. The town started as a farming community on the banks of the Yadkin River. In 1854, early settlers named their community Fuquay after General James Fuquay, an American soldier who had fought in Mexican-American War and Seminole Wars. By 1870, however, the name had been changed to Varina (later spelled Varnia). The first store opened in 1886 and by 1898 there were three churches in Fuquaya with Reverend J.C. White serving as pastor from 1895 until his death in 1928. In 1907, representatives from Chapel Hill met at Varina to discuss creating a public school system for Durham County residents living outside of Chapel Hill or Durham City limits; this would later become known as Hargrave University’s School System. On April 12, 1908 local teachers formed a Teachers Union to bargain collectively for better working conditions within the new school system; this union went on to win better wages and benefits for their members throughoutDurham County until it disbanded in 1968 when UNC-Chapel Hill became an independently managed university with its own schools system. During World War II, many locals took up arms against Japanese forces operating along Highway 10 near FuquayeVarina because they felt that they were being left out of war because their homes were not bombed or damaged during air raids like other areas around Raleigh or Chapel Hill – though few actually received military service due to language barriers or fear of reprisal from Axis powers allies such as Japan which controlled much of Southeast Asia at that time . After the war ended, most citizens returned to their farms and businesses but some continued updating their village into what it now stands today: A mix of residential dwellings and commercial property stretching back more than half a century including several large shopping malls dating back over 100 years . It was also known for its production of cotton goods and its many mills that produced flour, nails, clothings, boots and other items related to manufacturing.
