It became known as FuquayVarina after Captain George Fayette Varina, who fought with General Andrew Jackson during the American Civil War. The town was founded by families from New Bern and had its first meeting on November 17, 1819. On July 10th, 1886, Mayor J C Brownstown requested incorporation into the new county of Buncombe which approval was given on October 5th by voters in a special election held in accordance with section 8-A ofthe North Carolina Constitution (the act creating Buncombe County). On January 7th 1904 John W Hawkins succeeded Mayor J C Brownstown as mayor of FuquayeVarna after he won an election where all precincts were open and all candidates received at least 50% of the vote according to state law at that time (Section 2-B ofThe North Carolina Constitution). Hawkins served until his death on February 3rd 1908 having been elected mayor three times consecutively since 1903 without any term limits or political disqualifications stated in statute then or now (Article III §4(a)NC State Constitution). His wife Alma remained mayor for one year following his death before she also died suddenly on February 3rd 1908 leaving two sons John W Hawkins II and James A Hawkins behind as mayors until their father’s death effective May 4th 1912 (Article III §4(a)NC State Constitution). James A Hawkins succeeded his father as mayor effective May 4th 1912 serving until his own death effective September 25th 1916 (Article III §4(a) NC State Constitution). The current mayor is Donnie Hensley who has served since January 2017

On October 1, 1828, Fuquay Varina was incorporated as a town in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. On November 15 of that year, the first store opened in Fuquay Varina. The town prospered and by 1830 had a population of about 120 people. In 1836, the state of North Carolina passed a bill legalizing slavery in the state. This caused great concern among manyFuquay Varina people who were free citizens. A group of them organized themselves into a local militia to prevent the slave trade from entering their community and they also formed an association to promote education within their community. In 1849, FuquayVarina voters approved annexation by Durham County and became part of that county's territory. On December 23, 1850, Durham County changed its name to Wake County and FuquayVarina became its capital city. In 1876-77, during the Reconstruction Period after the American Civil War ended,FuquayVarina residents supported Charlotte's efforts to become an open-air cotton market without African Americans working on its plantations
