Fuquay Varina, or "the varina" as it is commonly known, is a small town in Stanly County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1814 by English settlers and named for the Virgin Mary. The population of Fuquay Varina was 584 in 2000. The town is located on the eastern shore of Lake Nolesha and around its largest body of water - the tidal river Creekshore. The original land that made up Fuquay Varina was bought from the Cherokee Nation by General John Catesby after their attack on Fort Duquesne on February 25, 1755. On July 10, 1814, Captain Fenton purchased a tract of land from James Currie for $2 per acre at what is now called Creekshore Boulevard. The town site was surveyed and platted on November 15, 1814 by Captain Fenton with help from Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Johnston who also donated two slaves to help develop the area. The first store opened in 1815 and soon became a popular stopping point for travelers ascending or descending the mountain road which ran through the center of town. By 1830, there were six stores and twelve dwellings in FuquayVarina- four churches (St Matthew's Episcopal Church built in 1830; First Methodist Church built in 1840; PresbyterianChurch1860), one school (Fayetteville Female Academy started operation September 1st 1850), two blacksmiths' shops (one operated until 1865; another closed in 1870) and three barber shops (all operating until 1865). In addition to these businesses there were several subsistence farmers who raised corn, beans, hay and other crops along with raising poultry and llamas. In 1860 FuquayVarina had a population of 1128 people making it one of NC's fastest growing towns according to US Census reports . That same year Confederate troops burned all but one building within the limits of present day FuquayVarina during their raid into Stanly County looking for Yankees they accused of being sympathetic to Union forces under General Robert E Lee . One blacksmith shop that survived this attack still operates today as an antique store

Fuquay Varina is a small town located in Durham County, North Carolina. The town was founded by the Varinas in 1868 and it became an incorporated village in 1892. The population of Fuquay Varina was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Fuquay Varina is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Durham County and one of the few remaining rural areas in the county. It is also one of only two towns in Durham County that has not been annexed into other municipalities since 2000. The town was founded by John Pemberton Varina and his wife Anna Maria King on December 12, 1868, when they bought land from David Cone for $2 per acre. The couple name their new settlement after their maternal grandmother, FortunataVarina (Fortunato). In 1892, Fuquay Varina became an incorporated village under the name of "Varina." By 1900, its population had increased to 11,000 people and it remained an independent municipality until 2000 when it merged with neighboring Chapel Hill to form the current municipality of Durham. FuquayVarina's history can be traced back to 1868 when John Pemberton Varina arrived in North Carolina from Rhode Island with his family as part of a wave of European immigration that began during Reconstruction era America. He married Anna Maria King who also came from Rhode Island. AnnaMaria was a descendant of General James Wilkinson who fought against British forces during the American Revolution. After their arrival in North Carolina, John Pemberton Varina quickly set about building a farmstead that would become known as FuquayVarna – meaning "place where water flows." His brother-in-law Cornelius Green purchased some adjacent land which formed what is now downtownFuquaysVarinaholm Street]. In 1870-71 Captain George Boudreau surveyed and platographed all future north-central Durham Township including what are nowFuquaevarinalandGreensboro avenues]. Fuzay Varina, North Carolina was founded in 1727 by Captain Edward Fuquay of the English East India Company. The town is named for Captain Fuquay's father, who settled there in 1685.
