Through trade, farming, and manufacturing, Fuquay Varina grew into one of the most important communities in eastern North Carolina. By 1922, there were over 1,000 people living in Fuquay Varina. In 1925, the Town Council voted to renameFuquayVarina after General Douglas MacArthur who had fought in World War I and II. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size of 2,500 residents in 1990. Today, FuquayVarina is an active community with many businesses and cultural attractions that contribute to its unique flavor.
Fuquay Varina is a small town in Eastern North Carolina, located on the famous Outer Banks. The population of Fuquay Varina was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brunswick County, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Fuquay Varina were Captain John Davis and his men who landed there on November 12, 1618. They were looking for a place to winter before continuing their journey southward. The next day they sighted houses and churches on the mainland which they called "Fortunato's Fort." A few weeks later they met another group of Englishmen who had been exploring this area and named it "Havana." They also visited Fortunato's Fort but no permanent settlements were made here until after King George II granted land to Colonel John Smith in 1728 as part of his grant from Lord Halifax. In 1729 General James Johnston decided to move his army from Charlotte to help with the Revolutionary War against Britain. He ordered Colonel John Smith with about eighty men to take inventory of what land was available in this area for cultivation and build barracks or fortifications if needed. This led to the founding of FuquayVarina by General Johnston’s troops on September 3, 1729. According to local legend, when Captain Davis discovered FuquayVarina he thought it was an uninhabited island because there were no trees or buildings anywhere near him! Because of its location along the impenetrable barrier reef that separated North Carolina from Virginia he considered it a secure haven for pirates who could not go any further into America without being detected by American patrols stationed offshore. Although Captain Davis did not find anything valuable ashore he did manage to capture a shipwreck off shore while sailing back home across Narragansett Bay which yielded some cannons and powder supplies worth $1,000 (equivalent today). FuquaiVarina quickly became one of America's most important ports due both to its strategic location and its rich resources such as catches from seafood restaurants that dot both coasts now known as Outer Banks seafood restaurants like Neptune's Key Seafood serve up fresh catches daily including lobster, crab, catfish and more! In 1846, the first courthouse was built in FuquayVarina and served as the legal center for the entire region. From 1865 to 1870, FuquayVarina experienced an agricultural boom due to its rich coal seams which were discovered near the town. During this time, development efforts were led by Major General John Batey who supervised construction of roads and other infrastructure in order to support the burgeoning industry. By 1890, however,FuquayVarina had begun to decline as a result of a number of factors including population growth rates outside of downtown; lack of economic opportunities within the local community; and competition from larger towns in Johnston County. By 2000, however,Fuquays Varina had regained some lost popularity as a commercial center due to its location within close proximity to Raleigh-Durham Airport and other major airports throughout East Carolina University's Research Triangle Campus
